and what about websites like SUN with soon to be over 50k pages? or maybe it is there already?

It is sayin 50k in a single sitemap, you can have more than one. So they would break it up.

Interesting that a site would expect to have more than 50,000 URLs. And how useful would that be, exactly?

I agree with CraigL.  How useful is 50,000 URLs and how do you keep up with all of them?

A large catalog site like Amazon, Home Depot, etc, could easily have >50K links to product detail pages.  But I am sure that they probably have a direct contact within Google, etc.

Sitemap file that you provide must have no more than 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 10MB (10,485,760) when uncompressed. These limits help to ensure that your web server does not get bogged down serving very large files.

Basically, a Google Sitemap is a file which contains URLs and some additional information for all public pages or documents of your website. Google can read this file and add the defined pages to their index.

Sitemaps are limited to 50,000 entries or 10 mb, but you can have multiple sitemaps with a sitemap index of 1,000 sitemaps.  That means 50,000,000 entries.

Some people get puzzled when they delete an old XML sitemap and later submit a new. Google Webmaster Tools will always for newly submitted sitemaps report indexed URLs as non-existing or quite low. Given some time, the count usually grows, but how fast depends on the website.
