Hello,

I'm a new Startup member and plan to open a 24 hour tutoring business.  We will go to students homes for scheduled sessions and be available via phone or email for late night/on-call service.  I'm putting together a questionnaire for my potential market.  Can anyone provide some direction on what types of questions to ask?

One obvious question is who will be paying for the service -- the student or the parent? You may need to do two surveys -- one for the students (types of tutoring needed, most difficult classes, typical times available for tutoring, etc.) and one for the parents (budget, in-home vs. on-call tutoring, level of parent involvement).

You'll also want to ask if they have used another tutoring service in the past, and if so, which one.

Best regards,

Molly Donaldson

What do they look for in a tutor? (Experience, knowledge, flexibility, price, etc)

What time works best for them? This way you'll know how to schedule yourself around the students.

Do they need long term or short term tutoring? Is it just for an upcoming final, or is this going to be a semester long type of deal?

Do they feel comfortable of you coming to their house? Would they rather want to come to you, or meet in a public place like a library?

When handing out your questionnaires ask them face to face if they are interested in your service. Try and get some bookings early on.

As important as it is to ask about what they like about a tutor or a tutoring service, it is equally important to ask what they don't like in a tutor or tutoring service.  It would be good to know early on what pitfalls you need to avoid.
