What`s your differentiation?

You`re going up against Craigslist, which is sometimes nearly cult-like in devotion. So what do you offer that would make me want to go there when I already have an account on CL?

Hi,

Great question

I am a heavy craigslist user and like CL; however, the reposting and messy layout is so frustrating.

TradeUrban.com has incorporated the following:

  • Nice Layout

  • Easy to locate search features

  • More Categories  (Check out our “Web Exchange” category)

  • The ability to create and manage your ads through a professional looking profile.

  • The ability to show your ads through a professional looking profile.

  • Advert ID Function

  • You can make an ad inactive and active with the click of a button.

  • Refine Search Feature

  • Contact List

  • A embed code feature for advertisements (Coming very soon).

  • The ability to turn any advert into a printable flyer with pull off tabs. (Coming very soon).

  • Also money we make will be put back into marketing TradeUrban.com to get your ads more exposure.

Also we have the desire to continuously improve, innovate, and simplify for users.

Want a feature or category added? let us know.

Posting on CL is like leasing a retail shop in a strip mall with 3000 of your competitors. On TradeUrban.com you would be one of the first stores on the block.

Plus everyone can piggy back off of my marketing efforts. It’s free what do you have to lose? (Use every free marketing medium you can)

OK, those sound like good differentiation ... now how do you get that across on the front of a site to a visitor that will hop on your site for ... maybe 10 seconds? ... to see what it is about before leaving!

I will try out the actual service later on this week and let you know if I have any comments.

I actually found your home page confusing.  The categories are the first thing you see because the images are so eye-catching.  So when I clicked on a category, I found no ads.  This is probably because this is a new site with little content at this point.  I had the option of changing the distance range but not for putting in my zip.  So how do you know where I am?  There were no ads even when I selected "any distance".

It wasn`t until I went back to the home page that I saw where it said "start here" where I could enter my zip.  The "start here" area is not very bold.  I started with the images because they were the strongest visual on the page.  Does that make sense?

Also, I don`t understand the "did you see a sign or flyer?" section.  What is the thing below with your web address and 800 number?  Is that your number?  It looks like an example number.  What is this an example of?  "For Sale!  TradeUrban.com".  Are you selling your site?  Huh?  I`m a pretty smart cookie when it comes to the internet but I just don`t get this.  What is an ID number?  How do I get one?  What does it do for me?  What does this have to do with signs or fliers?

So you are going up against CraigsList.  That`s great!  But the thing about CL is that it is sooooo very self-explanatory!  It`s incredibly easy to use and understand, a top-notch user experience.  This is probably it`s greatest strength.  You`ve got some excellent ideas for expanding the concept of what they have started but if you are going to take them on, I think you need to streamline your site.  Make it super easy to understand.  Right now, I think you are trying to have too many better-than-CraigsList options that it is confusing the user experience.

The biggest problem is the need for content:

I would think self promoting entrepreneurs, (that probably should be using every free marketing medium) available would be the first to post. Seeing as they would be the first and their ad would be the only one you see.

Great Question nhgnikole, that is a marketing challenge.

Once there is more content it wont be so hard / but it usually takes me a few times visiting a site before I like it; Ultimately, I’m still working on this, any suggestions?
Your expertise would be most appreciated.

Good points Nicole -

The site didn`t convince me why I should choose this site over craiglist
