We know what it’s like.  You have a great idea and are ready to begin building your business, but how do you know where to start? What are the first steps that you should take? Below are a few tips to get you started in the right direction.

1) Do what you love.
You're going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting a business and building it into a successful enterprise, so it's really important that you truly deeply enjoy what you do, whether it be running fishing charters, creating pottery or providing financial advice.

2) Start your business while you're still employed.
How long can most people live without money? Not long. And it may be a long time before your new business actually makes any profits. Being employed while you're starting a business means money in your pocket while you're going through the starting a business process.

3) Get clients or customers first.
Don't wait until you've offically started your business to line these up, because your business can't survive without them. Do the networking. Make the contacts. Sell or even give away your products or services. You can't start marketing too soon

4Have a Plan & Work That Plan
The first step toward starting a business is to have a plan in place. Most successful businesses take the time to make sure they have a blueprint to success, a plan.  When you have a blueprint and a direction to go, you will be so much more successful.  There are many free resources across the Internet that can aid you in structuring and thinking through the writing of your business plan. Once you get the plan in place, follow it!

5) Do the research.
You'll do a lot of research writing a business plan, but that's just a start. When you're starting a business, you need to become an expert on your industry, products and services, if you're not already. Joining related industry or professional associations before you start your business is a great idea......read more http://news.bytrade.com/info/884-Top-Business-Start-Up-Tips-For-Ultimate-Success.htm

Actually, I disagree with your first point and your last points. Do what you love and do the research.

First, I know a lot of people who've make their money with something that doesn't take a lot of their time. Which gives them the freedom to have fun and go on adventures all the time. I've seen plenty of awful ideas come from people trying to turn their passion into business.

Second, I find that a lot of people will get sucked in to 'information junkie' mode - and then never get around to taking action. These days there's almost TOO MUCH information out there, and if you're not on top of it, it'll make you extremely unproductive.

I always go back to that old saying "A task will take as much time as you give it"
