Ok, my fellow SUNies,

Here is something to ponder on...I need as much feed back as possible.
I own a web development company in southern California. As I mentioned before, I started out this business with a 200 dollar credit card and a dream to make it big. Well it`s been 4 years now and I feel happy to say that I`ve had my shares of ups and downs, but I`ve made it to the next phase of "The Business Plan"

I have a few questions to ask. Has anyone ever outsourced their custom programming over seas? Is it safe to do so?
If it can be done.. how do you treat it at the end of the year? Is it still a write off? How would I go on about claiming it.... As a business expense or what?

anyone?

Edgar,

I actually began outsourcing here in the United States. You might be shocked to find that there are plenty of developers here in the United States who are willing to do the work and are quite good at it and affordable at the same time. You may want to check out a company that is in the Dallas area and they are named Code Partners and they can be found at www.codepartners.biz

If you are interested in talking about outsourcing website design, I would be interested in talking with you about that. Please message me or call me when you have a moment.

Kind Regards,

jonese

The only thing my firm has learned with outsourceing work to anyone is you have to micro manage it and you have to make sure your specs are rock solid. We found that if it was assumed or not in the specs clearly it was skipped.

I have outsourced to AU, India, Egypt, Russia.  Language barriers can be a problem but the work is done cheaply.  I use RentACoder.com.

I`ve seen a lot projects that were done for other people being sold off for nothing. For example: A fully working Spyware Detector app for $200.

Sooo... don`t give them the whole thing.  Just the hard parts ;)

I have not personally but I have several associates who have it as an integral part of their business model and they have had great success with it.  I would agree with a couple of the other posters that your specs need to be very detailed.

I have outsourced to college kids because
1) they are good at it
2) they work cheap!
3) I can pay them through paypal once I am satisfied with the work so no micro managing. They either do the job or I find someone else.

Coming from a website dvelopment company, I have seen many clients who have tried both college students and companies over seas and both have had problems and that is why they end up going to a company that does this full time. My concern with a college student even if they do great work, is that they may relocate to another area and may be hard to reach for updates/ edits. I myself am an outsourcing partners for many website design companies here in the United States. I have set up a system where many website design companies have chosen to have our company design sites for them and they get a flat per hour rate from us and then they turn around and mark it up so that it is profitable for them. When they deal with us they deal with a company in the Dallas, TX area and they now have someone who works when they work, who accepts all forms of payments and also is a company that is goverened by the laws here in the US.

Is there a source for such labor ( a specific web site) or do you just have to contact each university individually
