Hi Ltressel,

Twelve months to meet people...no problem! Here are some tips that might cut some corners for you: join a sport team, take up a hobby through a club, or check the local paper for community activities.  If all goes well then you will get to follow your interests while making new friends and better yet you will be around people who have similiar interests.

I don`t believe this is what you are really asking for but regarding connectors, with today`s technology we have many options from face to face connections to electronic connections.  Plus thanks to databases like ACT software, it now easier then ever to "stay in touch" by writing a common mail merge letter and then personalizing each individual letter with comments which have meaning between the author and the receipient.

Best wishes in meeting people who next August will be there to celebrate the awesomeness of another wonderful year in your life!

Meeting people: isn`t that the point of these social networking things that everyone`s talking about nowadays?

Maybe they`re not the folks you`d invite to your birthday party, yet, but after you`ve become a success I think you`ll find it easy to get back into the social world again.

Remember that you can`t do everything at once. To start a business and make it successful is a whole lot of hard and very focused work! Yes, you may lose out on the parties and gatherings, and may have to work during Thanksgiving and Christmas, but that`s part of the price you pay for eventually managing your own destiny.

Later, when you`ve put processes in place, and you have employees (who also get paid vacations), then you can relax in the Bahamas, looking out over the beach, and contemplate how better to avoid the IRS. :-)

To NicoleC and CraigL

Thanks so much for the pep talk.  Recently, I have taken steps to change things after reading the Tipping Point. I`ve joined online forums to connect and be social online. Start Up Nation is one of the forums I joined and has now found some connection to the outside world.  Not that I am hermit or anything.

I also volunteered to coordinate a business mixer here in LA with other SUN members.  The meeting will take place this Saturday.  Finally, people in the flesh.

As far as the connector and maven theory, I always believed in the who and what you know process.  Business wise I`d like to connect to people whom I can help and I can seek help and ideas from.  They might know someone who knows someone and vice versa. I am hoping to reach my "tipping point" in this new venture that I am in.

Don`t we all?

LT

There`s only one problem when dealing with complex problems, and that`s the fact that they`re complex.

Consider how you`re saying you`d like to meet mostly people who you think can help you in your business development. How would you know?

Suppose you meet a cashier checkout person, and talk a bit while they`re ringing up your order. You mention something about your product, smile, and head on out the door. But how do you know if that checkout kid isn`t in a family where one of the parents is on the board of an investment company?

The better idea is to contemplate the role of luck and serendipity in anything we do in life. When the complexity of the situation is great, the best thing is to do what "feels like the best idea at the moment."

It`s far too easy to severely limit your possibilities by using your single intellect to formulate a plan or solution. Another way of illustrating is to say, "Oh...if only I had $10,000....my problems would be solved."

But suppose you were about to get $100,000? By focusing only on what YOU think would solve your problems, you strongly increase your chances of not noticing the opportunity to gain tenfold.

Hi CraigL,

As my post would prove, I never said I was specifically looking for particular people. In fact what I said is "Who and What you know" which pertains to the six degrees of separation from the book and "Someone who might know someone."  which translates to no one specific and not business specific and certainly not just within my "world."

Therefore, I am not "severely limiting my possibilities by using my single intellect to formulate a plan or solution." I think you clearly misinterpreted what I said. Your serendipity and luck concept is cute but I like six degrees of separation better.

:-) Fair enough. Perhaps I did misinterpret. It doesn`t matter all that much, but rather that you`re out there meeting folks, doing stuff, and putting yourself "in the wind." Kinda like being in a sailboat. You can stay in the harbor, or go out on the open water. Either way is fun and interesting, but you tend to end up in more unusual places when you`re out sailing.
