If you gave someone a gift card for Christmas, you may have thrown away your money.

What I find so despicable about this story is that those companies knew before Christmas that they were having financial difficulties, yet they still took people`s hard-earned money. This is wrong on every level.

What do you think?

I think that when we look back on this "turn of the century" time, or when our kids look back, this will be the time that such things as morality and spirituality began to re-enter the overall cultures of the world. You`re right, this is the worst sort of shark attack, but it seems to show this increasing split toward extremes.

For each story we have about these types of businesses, there also are stories about new types of businesses that have an actual interest in whether or not they`re helping the community and world around them.

I think you are right, Dale...but I have an even bigger problem with the Chapter 11 regulations that treat gift cards as a loan...this is what really leaves people hanging out there...and actually hurts the company`s image in my opinion, regardless of how it allows the company to reorganize and try to recover...just my opinion

So Sharper Image stores are still open for business, just not accepting gift cards? BS. If I had one, I ASSURE you, I would NOT leave the store without them accepting it.

I wholeheartedly agree.  It`s wrong that they can count it as a loan.  On what planet does that make any sense?  If it`s a loan...I, as the loanee, want to renegotiate the interest rate, because it sure stinks!!  I got an Uno`s gift card for Christmas.  Shortly thereafter I read a story that they were closing up shop.  I emailed and got a PHONE CALL from the company to reassure me that they were NOT closing the store nearest me, it was one franchise owner that was closing their own stores.  At first I was reassured, then I started thinking about it.  A phone call?  Just to me?  I don`t flatter myself that I`m an important player in the grand scheme of things...why would they call me personally, when an email would have done?  So then I`m nervous about the future with them now.  Hmmm.

Unfortunately, you can no longer trust gift cards - regardless of where they`re from.

Very interesting. I didn`t realize they could even do that with gift cards. I don`t really like buying gift cards anyway, because I feel like I should take time to pick out an actual gift. Sounds like I`d better stick with my approach for now. Maybe other people will too!
