This Valentine’s Day, is love in your air, or solely retailers’ marketing messages?

Despite the barrage, both online and off, of Valentine’s Day messaging over the last month, I procrastinated this year.  Like many other lovers, I wasted a lot of time this weekend trying to find the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.  Unfortunately, my boyfriend doesn’t ‘need’ anything and is not a fan of frivolous gifts.  I felt compelled to buy something, yet arrived home empty-handed and frustrated.  I thought to myself, “Am I merely trying to find a Valentine’s Day gift because I know he is buying one for me?”   If so, my dominant buying motive is ultimately guilt- which is bad for me; great for retailers.

I’m curious, as always, to know how many of you buy Valentine’s Day gifts because you feel obligated vs. genuinely want to do something special for your sweetheart?

I’m also looking for gift ideas, so share those too!  Is a framed photo, home-cooked meal and an invitation to, “Be mine,” sufficient?

Hi Curiousliz and All at Startupnation!

I am new here, and think it`s a great site!  I`ve spent alot of time reading everything.

I couldn`t pass up the opportunity to tell you, if he`s a jerky lover, you better get him some of that too.

Fine wine and a good home cooked dinner works well for giving or receiving!

I don`t do anything special ... I just got him a card and some chocolate.

I let him buy a Wii yesterday ... that`s enough money for one week!

I don`t think it`s the marketing messages because I`m not really exposed to it. I`m more influenced by my mom, who is the master of all gift giving ... she always used to find the best little things for Valentine`s Day, St Paddy`s, Easter, Christamas stockings, or whatever.

Ha!  You, "let" him buy a Wii yesterday AND bought him a card with chocolate, how nice of you!  I’m so glad that you said that!  Perhaps the best gift of all is compromise…

I forewent working out yesterday in order make homemade chicken noodle soup for my sick boyfriend and he was incredibly appreciative.  He has made countless compromises for me.  I think I’ll try to capture the most important compromises and sacrifices that he has made for me in a scrap/story book of sorts- what a unique gift! I may even “let” him go out with his friends this weekend, which would be the best gift of all- LOL!

My mom is a great gift giver too!  She never ceases to amaze me- she offers gifts during the holidays to just about everyone, and each gift is tailored to the recipient.  For example, my mom always chooses a gift that is Chartreuse for my dad’s secretary because it’s her favorite color, and something with palm trees for her favorite waitress because she loves them.  At Easter, my mom paints icons for people who are sick or grieving.  She always manages to find the time to create or buy the perfect gift!
