I just had a very pleasant email surprise, courtesy indirectly of the SuN forum.  In the "Sage Advice" thread a few weeks ago I posted the following:

"From adman John Kobasic: "Always take the time to share what you have learned about the business with others interested in the profession."
When I got out of college in 1980 there were no design jobs to be had. Instead of asking if firms had available jobs, I basically begged people to talk with me about their jobs and career history.  John Kobasic, the principal of a Portland ad agency at the time, was one of the individuals that said he could give me about 20 minutes of his time to discuss the industry. He shared a great deal of advice that I still remember very clearly today. After talking with me for over an hour, he brought our discussion to a close. I thanked him profusely, and told him I hoped I could somehow repay his kindness in taking the time to meet with me. He smiled and said, “You can show your appreciation by always taking the time to share what you have learned about the business with others interested in the profession.”"

Today I received an email from John Kobasic.  Nearly 26 years after he took the time to meet with me he learned of my continuing gratitude when the posted SuN forum message popped up on an Internet search. 

The last time I might have seen him was over 20 years ago at some local advertising social function - but that initial meeting I described in my post was always so important and valuable to me.  I learned from his email that he left the advertising business nine years ago and is in L.A. with a new title:  Starving Actor.  How great to learn he is following his passion for performing.

One of the nicest things about the email from him today was the comment: "Probably my most rewarding memories were meeting talented young people like yourself who demonstrated a passion for the business."

Thanks SuN for reconnecting me with an important piece of my business past.
