Excellent post, and comments here.  You might also ask directly what exactly are you looking for?  Or, what exactly do you mean by bid?  Many times buyers regurgitate what they`ve been told to say or ask, without knowing what they are really saying.  Also, its only natural to ask about a "price, quote, or bid" - that`s what we`ve all been taught.  Few of us reading this post go buy anything without first asking about price....it should almost be taken as a formality.  Like when someone asks "What`s up?" - its a formality.  I think assuming that the client is talking about price when they say "bid" is a bad assumption....it will take the sales process into the analytical side...instead of making it about the emotional response.
