The domain name that would benefit me most is already owned.  I have tried to reach out to the owner and have never gotten a response.  The existing site seems like a place holder.  Related search terms to the domain name hyperlinked to other pages of more related searches.

Is there a reliable service that could track down the owner and obtain the domain name for me efficiently.  Anyone have any experience with this?

I think that Sedo and GoDaddy offer domain brokers that assist in getting domain names that are already taken ... in the meantime, try to find alternate domain names that would work, just in case ....

Have you tried whois.com?
If you go to GoDaddy and search for your domain name, their site will offer dozens of similar sounding sites for your consideration.
By the way, it is useless to shop different registrars because they all use the same database.  Pick one and stick with them.

I agree with Steve and M Hall about checking on whois.com and GoDaddy.com or even try Bydomains.com but I am sure you can come up with another web address. If this is for an internet based company don`t let it stop you. Come up with another name in the mean time while you keep trying to obtain the one you want.

Here`s another site where you can search for alternative domain names http://ajaxwhois.com.
Ajaxwhois offers a different experience in domain name searching and also provides links to other useful domain name tools. I`ve been using it quite a bit lately. A little bit o domainiac in me.

Ajaxwhois is a GoDaddy reseller, but I do like their "instant" check on domains.

I was going to recommend utilizing http://www.ajaxwhois.com as well.

Is the domain name a key part of your brand or are you worried about indexing?

Is there a reason that you don`t want to ask for naming advice here?  What is the domain you wanted and what is the nature of the business?

did you go to network solutions who is? http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

Also, for the time being if the name is multiple words can you just enter - between the words so that you can still get the dot com version i.e. www.my-domain-name.com

I have several sites like that but they still have fairly high rankings because 1. they are easy to read when people see the name and 2 they have strong marketing campaigns. In the end as much as it comes down to the name it is going to also depend on how they find the name in the first place.

I like iwhois.com and instantdomainsearch.com.  Also, check out this page for godaddy coupons.  (Typically $3 off a .com and other good deals).

It is always frustrating to not be able to get the name you want.  Just try contacting the owners.  You never know who may be willing to give you a deal.
Regards,
Charlie
