I elected a change from Bush, not Bush 2.0. Not only are prisoners continuing to be detained indefinitely, but even those who are acquitted can be held indefinitely to prevent them from possibly committing crimes in the future. This is absurd. If holding people for half a decade without a trial, only to proceed to kangaroo court show trials which prohibit the use of evidence by the defense for "security reasons", we can now keep people in prison even if they manage to beat the odds and get acquitted. Why? Because if they didn`t hate the US before, they have good reason to now. I imagine the administration fears all the innocent prisoners actually becoming combatants. Comments? I`m let down. I voted for Obama because he`d represent justice. Aside from abandoning torture (definitely a big plus), our human rights are continuing to decline towards Orwellian dystopian standards. I don`t think this is good. What if it was you that was arrested, found innocent, and then tossed in a prison to rot anyway? Why have trials if the only conclusion to said trial is prison: guilty, innocent, it`s prison for everyone.

You [and all others] who voted for Obama did so primarily because of "change."  This is a meaningless concept - EVERYBODY will change something.  Obama just would not tell us what.  Voting is the opiate of the masses.  Enjoy it - and paying for his mistakes.  He is racking up debt faster than all other previous presidents combined.

To the original poster, this is how it always will be from now on.  There are only small amounts of change to the left or right.  The general direction of our military and choices that the government makes will never do a complete 360.  Obama finally saw what was really going on and couldn`t make the changes he wanted to.  Troop withdrawl, Pakistan, detainees, etc.

To patent, check on this graph of US debt based on GDP and you get a different story:

Bush had almost no opposition instituting torture, detaining for years without trial, and devising show-trials. Obama is getting opposition at every step when reversing them. That says more about the country than the presidents themselves. 9-11 changed the nation. We`ll accept any and all injustices in the name of safety. Sometimes I think I stand alone believing the US is supposed to represent the higher moral ground.

My vote for Obama wasn`t based on the economy. I figure the economy was a lost cause no matter who was elected. McCain had no real plan either. Obama is continuing the Bush policy of stimulus. Bush did the first round, then asked Obama if he wanted a 2nd round initiated for when he took office, and Obama`s done a third. The economy carries no weight in my evaluation of Obama because nobody in the world knows how to fix it. Some European nations are mirroring our solution. Others are going the opposite direction and tightening the spending. My vote for Obama was solely on the moral issues of how to best wage a war, and foreign relations in general.

I will say that Obama is doing fine on the foreign relations part - better than anyone in a long time. I`m not even sure the blame for the detainee issues are his fault. He`s being opposed at every step by congress who`s desperate to kill his rockstar hero status.

You [and all others] who voted for Obama did so primarily because of "change."  This is a meaningless concept - EVERYBODY will change something.  Obama just would not tell us what.  Voting is the opiate of the masses.  Enjoy it - and paying for his mistakes.  He is racking up debt faster than all other previous presidents combined.

the graphs portray soaring private and government debt.  Hussein is ensuring this gets even worse.

As long as we have a significant population blaming the world`s problems on Bush, we`ll continue to have exactly the same problems. As many wise people have said, "We get the best government money can buy."

It`s amazing how many people focus on one person as the root of all evil.  Truth is, our government functions as an elected body.  No one person controls what our government does.  And, we are responsible for who gets elected.  So the blame, good ar bad, falls on us.

As news continues to surface about the true extent of the secret counterterror measures of the past administration, it`s becoming more and more apparent that the executive office has a lot more power than people like to think. Did you happen to see the article in the news today? I saw it on Yahoo when I was checking my mail. It`s about how Cheney ordered the CIA not to inform the rest of the government about its various beyond top secret initiatives that are only now just coming to light. The Executive branch can apparently do anything it wants, without telling anyone, so long as it includes "terrorism" in the briefing header. They hire secret judges as rubber stamps to make it all kosher, apparently. It needn`t bother with 200 year old formalities like checks and balances. All these program revelations are making Cheney`s hot air from a few months ago, when he was on TV every 10 minutes fighting Obama, start to make sense. It was a guilty conscience.

Every 4 years or so the politicans are substituted but the politics remain the same. It constantly amazes me that throughout the decades voters never seem to get this. What we need is a change of system.
