As LSI and over-optimization penalties become more obvious in the SERPs, I think that sometimes having a little bit of knowledge in this area can be a dangerous thing.  I would agree that it is essentially a manipulative practise, whichever way you look at it, however that is not to say that businesses should not capitalize on it.

In much the same way as companies publish reports to gain brand exposure, and tie them into their products and services,  SEO copywriting is merely a means of ensuring that you get your message across. I would say the best way to ensure that you do not cross any ethical boundaries, is to make sure that visitors can find helpful information that relates to the search queries that you are optimizing for.

The fact of the matter is that we are not all on a even playing field. Sites that have been around for 5 or more years do not suffer the same penalties specifically in Google  that newer sites do. The truth be told the only thing you can do is make sure your pages are properly coded (i.e correct meta tags, page title, and H tags). Tweak existing and add clear and focused content to your site. Lastly,  build a steady stream of both inbound and outbound links to other quality websites.

The risks are devastating to a sites search engine traffic if you wind up in the penalty box. Why even risk it?

Quality content brings quality site traffic. It takes time so be patient and best of luck!

Andrew Field, one of Startup Nation`s bloggers, posed this link on 6/3/07. It`s an interview with people over at Google, explaining how (to some extent) the search engine business works.

Google Keeps Tweaking Its Search Engine

More than any other articles and forum posts, this explains how many factors go into making search results relevant. SEO writing is only a small fraction of what goes on. Yes, it`s helpful, but it isn`t the end-all be-all.

Ultimately, either you have a product people would want to buy in good faith, or you have a scheme by which to convince people to buy something they`re not really interested in.
