What is the craziest business related thing you ever did?

I think mine was when I led a really moronic Nigerian 419 advance fee scammer on by telling him I was a registered, fourth generation, dealer of kryptonite and phlogiston from the Republic of San Marino. The surname I signed off with was nothing but a garden variety Italian obscenity (dal Ca**o), but I explained that it was a testimony to my being a descendant of a nobleman with extensive kryptonite plantations and an exclusive hereditary EU charter to deal in phlogiston in San Marino and Tuscany.

I kept claiming that under EU law the scammer had to send me $5 via Western Union in order for me to transfer the eleventy thousend dollers or whatever he wanted.

He fell for me hook line and sinker (including the phony name and the equally vulgar Italian address I gave him in San Marino) but he clearly did not have the $5 to send to me! I had to cut it short because I just did it to keep myself busy during a legal holiday weekend and I had to get back to real business after a day or so, but he kept asking me when I was going to come to Africa to meet him for days if not weeks after I stopped my correspondence!

There was once a company I was looking to introduce my service to.  Something about this company made me crazy, I wouldn`t stop until I got to talk with the owner becuase I knew that I could help them.  I knew they had some issues and were looking for a service like HR outsourcing through a conversation I had with a low ranking manager, but everytime I called, I would never be able to get passed voice mail and the screener.  I sent a fed-ex package with my info in it, no call back.  I left two messages, no call back.  I sent an email no response, but for some reason I didn`t want to give up intil I got to talk to this owner.  He had a 650 employee company.

So after googling the owners name I found out he was into softball.  I know this sounds a bit stalker-ish but stay with me.  So I ended up finding the schedule to his softball game and attended the game on  a saturday afternoon.  After his team won, they celebrated at the field with a few beers and I approached him and mentioend my name.  You should have seent he look on his face.  When he asked how I found him, my reply was simply "Im resourceful."

It turns out he was extremely impressed with my persitance and my resources and agreed for me to meet with him one on one for dinner to discuss his HR issues in his company and my services.  After a 3 month consulting dance, I won his businesss!  We are still longtime friends and he sends more more referrals than any other client that I have.

I took a risk.  I could have completely backfired on me and I could have been embarrassed and made him upset.  I have not done this again to this magnitude but it worked out and that is my crazy business story!

One of the first appointments I ever went on (about 30 years ago), I tripped over the lamp cord, knocked it down and the lamp burst into flames. No damage but what a start to my career!

I was this close to get arrested and get my license suspended. I didn’t realized the intricacies of patents and copyrights as against the design which I was about to use. All thanks to a friend who noticed it and helped me realize my mistake.

We are from Wisconsin. During his visit to our son in Seattle this summer, we celebrated the birthday of my wife in a boat street cafe. Nice atmosphere. A diverse list. Wonderful food. The service is excellent.
