Startups all have one thing in common, if you have success you are now an Employer. No one starts a business becuase thier dream is to deal with employee related issues. Here are just ten of the steps to hiring that first employee.

Obtain an employer identification number.

Register with your state`s labor department.

Set up a payroll system to withhold taxes.

Get worker`s compensation insurance.

Adopt workplace saftey measures.

Post required notices.

Set up personnel files.

Create an employee handbook.

Set up employee benefits.

File IRS Form 940 EZ each year.

A explanation of each requirment is available in a one page format. Send me your e-mail address and I would be happy to send it to you.

Could you possibly give us business owners, who work with contractors, advice also?  If yes, a 10 step list would also be great.

Thanks.

Sorry Aaron,

We specialize in more human resource related areas. One tip is universal however. You must see all current proof of insurance and licensing needed. In MI that means atleast a workers compensation cert. Good luck.
