   Hi group,

I just started a home-based business this year in the art and graphics sector. I just finished doing my taxes complete with Schedule C. I really had no profit this year (just a part-time business starting out) although I did have expenses. What I don`t quite understand is that my federal refund seems to be about the same as its been in years past (without any business deductions). I thought it might be a little larger. Can anyone explain (with this limited info) something I might be missing? Also - any recommended resources to read up on that might explain these concepts and ideas?

Thanks to all who can shed some light on this relatively new topic,
Carl

Carl,

Good luck on your new business!  You may find it time consuming, but it will also be rewarding.

As for your tax question, what you should really be comparing is the total taxes you are paying, not your refund.

Your total taxes will tell you exactly how much you paid in taxes this year and how much  you paid in taxes last year.

Your refund simply tells you how large of an interest free loan you gave the government this year vs. last year.  If your refund is less this year then last year you gave the IRS less of your money to use for free.  Thus, if your refund was less this year then last year, you did better this year.
