The role of the entrepreneur and the private sector in matters of national security is a critically important element often overlooked. Whether it is offering support for intelligence gathering or counter-terrorism, private business has become an important tool in shaping the security of the United States.
With the focus today on nuclear proliferation in Iran and North Korea, not to mention Pakistan and a variety of other countries who have the capability (or will have the capability) of developing the bomb, security and intelligence has taken on an entirely new face.
The development of security and intelligence solutions is a necessity. While the government does its job, private business is also doing its job by shaping their business to face a new kind of global threat, which translates into a new kind of national security threat.
With the break-up of the Soviet Union into independent republics also came the black market sales of weapons, uranium and a variety of other munitions and technologies that, in the hands of terrorists, can create a national security threat never before witnessed.
Biological and chemical weapons are of major concern, and while it has been the private sector which has developed much of this capability, it is also the private sector where security and intelligence solutions can be developed and applied to preventing the use of these elements in a terrorist attack.
The mood of complacency is alive and well. People do not want to think about terrorism and many have already dismissed 911 as a distant tragedy. But the threats against our country are alive and thriving. Our intelligence community and law enforcement work around the clock to combat the daily threats against our nation. The private sector has a vital role to play and many are working to make our nation and our planet safe, secure and are providing a better future for our children and our grandchildren in the process.
As technological advances continue to evolve, so too do those who would use them for acts of blatant terror.
Business can and must become a cooperative force in the national security of the country. It can make great and monumental contributions to security and intelligence solutions for the 21st century.
Despite what some would have you believe, the national security of our country is not the government`s responsibility alone. It requires the support of citizens, private business and the government in an effort to make our national security second to none.
The demand is there and we, as entrepreneurs, can do our part in contributing to the national security of the United States in a meaningful, effective and monumental way.

Being diligent in your awareness of what packages get shipped to and from your business is an easy way to start. You wouldn`t want your company to be an unwitting accessory to an illegal plot. How many plots could`ve been avoided if the business stopped and thought, "You know, I don`t think this order is legit." Be it a disgruntled teen cleaning out a gun shop, or a crazy ex marine buying a half ton of fertilizer. All businesses know what their usual transactions are, or they should. There`s nothing wrong with stopping to think when something raises a red flag. Most people don`t, I think. Odds are, the legit customer will understand a reasonable delay. I`ve had credit card orders put on hold for my own financial security when a red flag is raised as to the possibility that my card is stolen. There`s little difference. If you lose one customer in the effort of ensuring the safety of everyone, you can sleep well at night, a few dollars poorer.

Well said Matt. Well said. And Tara, you are correct. For those who produce such weapons, it is a duty to have security solutions in place to prevent their use in acts of terror.

It`s obvious what sort of role in national security that engineers, pharmacists, electronics/computer/weapons manufacturers, and the like have as entrepreneurs in aiding national security. Quite simply, the bad guys use their goods to operate. You can add bankers to that list. What about the less glamorous entrepreneurs? I`ll be straight forward. I`m opening a cafe. What could a cafe owner do to aid national security? Is there much at all? I have the same duties in that regard as a non entrepreneur, in reporting suspicious activity. Is there anything, once I successfully don the title "Entrepreneur" that I should add to my list of duties? It`s a serious question, because I always try to do the right thing. This cafe is intended to be "green", "fair trade" and every good trait I can muster. If it can be even more, I really am all ears. Ignorance isn`t bliss.

How about a different twist to the topic, and the role of entrepreneurs in nations like Iran and Iraq?
We can make a good argument that in totalitarian regimes, people go along with terrorism because they`ve got no ownership or stake in anything at all, not even their own country.
When people have a personal stake in a country, the land and their personal possessions, that`s when they stop being nutbags and terrorists.
So the role of the entrepreneur in world security is that each business owner and startup entrepreneur in totalitarian, poverty-stricken nations is one less terrorist to contend with.
agreed, plus when people are busy making money, they don`t have time to worry about blowing things up.
:-) Unless they have a startup specializing in selling explosives of various kinds. Good money in that, I`m assuming, for a terrorist market.
