Hi all -
With my new book`s manuscript due on September 20th my initial thought was "what summer?" However, I have been picking and choosing what to do for rest, relaxation and fun - and I can always take my PowerBook with me if necessary.
With the
new backyard garden we are entertaining MUCH more than usual. BBQs and dinner parties - a college graduation BBQ for my partner`s sister, a sit-down dinner for 12 for his office staff and their spousal units, quiet dinners with individual friends, etc. And the "playing in the dirt" garden therapy is great for me.
We`ve also spent a couple nights out at "our country house" - the home a friend on the grounds of his business,
Joy Creek Nursery. It`s only about 20-25 minutes from our home, but it`s a great escape from the city. Enjoying the 4.5 acres of show gardens is a great way to spend and evening and morning.
We have a self-contained camping van and there`s been a couple "run away from home" evenings to the nine-acre property of some friends about 40 minutes south of Portland. It`s beautiful "camping" next to the pond on their property. In fact, next weekend we will be there viewing a movie from our lawn chairs on a screen set up outdoors.
The beach is just an hour from our home and a couple escapes are planned to
Cannon Beach and Manzanita (my favorite place on the Oregon Coast). One trip is a Board of Directors retreat for my partner - and I`m not required to do a damn thing (except read, walk on the beach and nap).
We`re also doing the
LiveStrong Challenge walk here in Portland.
Our big summer get-away each year also signals the end of the vacation season. For over a decade we`ve been spending a week+ each year gold mining on a stream in the beautiful
Wallowa Mountains. A friend`s family has two miles of claims (which they`ve had since the 1940`s) and up to ten friends usually spend the time together having incredible meals, drinking French and Italian wines, reading a lot, napping, and watching amazing sunsets from a mountain top. The trip is actually kind of a small business retreat as most of those who go are independent business owners. The best thing about the trip - cell phones and "butt-berries" don`t work in the canyon. Yes, we do find gold each year - but none of us is going to get rich. We usually come out of camp just after Labor Day - to a light dusting of snow at the higher elevation...and summer is over.
Hmmm...I guess I will be having a summer after all. Enjoy yours all! (and have a wonderful wedding/honeymoon Joel!)
- J.
