Some of you have come to know that sometimes, after hours and days of doing the Start Up thing....I must start a thread that has to do with something fun or even funny, as opposed to  work...

So here goes:

Let this be the post of summertime fun...who is doing what?  How are you cooling off?  Where are you going?  What are you doing with all of those beautiful summer blueberries and of course Jersey tomatoes?

Here`s my first entry...The funniest thing I`ve seen so far, is when walking Trotter, my chocolate Lab....he will spot a sprinkler ...he puts his snout right on top of the spray nozzle...none of the water gets into his mouth...it just sprays all over him...he gets very agitated and starts jumping around in the water...lolol

That sight makes me laugh out loud and gets me back into the right frame of mind to do what I need to get done.

So what are you up to this summer?  We already know that Joel is getting married (in August no less....lol)

Cookouts and BBQs. Waiting for it to rain - and when it does, just walking around in it. Swimming in pools owned by friends (they do the upkeep). Eating tomatoes out of the garden - had a BLT for lunch today ... MMMMMMMMMM good. Watching my yard burnup from no rain and a watering ban - too many people in the ATL. Nights on the front porch. Backpacking trips in the cool of the north GA mountains. Dips in the rivers and springs. Drinking from a underground spring bubbling out of the ground. Planning a BIG trip for this winter - to the islands, mon!

Well, my wife and my anniversary is July 21. She has something planned but I don`t know what it is. I think it will take a few days (the weekend). I hope it`s fun. Last year we went to Los Vegas for a week.

My summer will pretty much consist of working, cleaning the house, getting organized and caring for my kids. If the occasional little fun thing should come along - great. We are going to a cookout tomorrow night and a kid`s birthday party Sunday. We don`t have plans for anything big though. We did take a small trip to NJ for 3 days last month, but it was no vacation. I had a horrible time! My little guy was sick and cranky and drove me up the wall. I was happy to be home where I have some control over what goes on.

Yes, the wedding is August 5. Then the honeymoon!

We`re staying in northern Michigan for a week of honeymooning and I don`t know where we`re going! Suzanne has made all the plans.

Wonder what we`ll do?

Hi all -

With my new book`s manuscript due on September 20th my initial thought was "what summer?"  However, I have been picking and choosing what to do for rest, relaxation and fun - and I can always take my PowerBook with me if necessary.

With the new backyard garden we are entertaining MUCH more than usual.  BBQs and dinner parties - a college graduation BBQ for my partner`s sister, a sit-down dinner for 12 for his office staff and their spousal units, quiet dinners with individual friends, etc.  And the "playing in the dirt" garden therapy is great for me.

We`ve also spent a couple nights out at "our country house" - the home a friend on the grounds of his business, Joy Creek Nursery.  It`s only about 20-25 minutes from our home, but it`s a great escape from the city.  Enjoying the 4.5 acres of show gardens is a great way to spend and evening and morning.

We have a self-contained camping van and there`s been a couple "run away from home" evenings to the nine-acre property of some friends about 40 minutes south of Portland. It`s beautiful "camping" next to the pond on their property. In fact, next weekend we will be there viewing a movie from our lawn chairs on a screen set up outdoors.

The beach is just an hour from our home and a couple escapes are planned to Cannon Beach and Manzanita (my favorite place on the Oregon Coast).  One trip is a Board of Directors retreat for my partner - and I`m not required to do a damn thing (except read, walk on the beach and nap).

We`re also doing the LiveStrong Challenge walk here in Portland.

Our big summer get-away each year also signals the end of the vacation season.  For over a decade we`ve been spending a week+ each year gold mining on a stream in the beautiful Wallowa Mountains.  A friend`s family has two miles of claims (which they`ve had since the 1940`s) and up to ten friends usually spend the time together having incredible meals, drinking French and Italian wines, reading a lot, napping, and watching amazing sunsets from a mountain top.  The trip is actually kind of a small business retreat as most of those who go are independent business owners.  The best thing about the trip - cell phones and "butt-berries" don`t work in the canyon.  Yes, we do find gold each year - but none of us is going to get rich.  We usually come out of camp just after Labor Day - to a light dusting of snow at the higher elevation...and summer is over.

Hmmm...I guess I will be having a summer after all.  Enjoy yours all! (and have a wonderful wedding/honeymoon Joel!)

Wow Joel...how exciting...a surprise honeymoon!  I can see the blog now...
Can a surprise honeymoon teach us about the unexpected in our business endeavors?"

I`m just trying to get my herb garden to survive...we have had such wacky weather in the NE that I can`t get anything to flourish.

Can`t beat getting married,..Best of luck to you, Joel!

My wife and I are celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary today. We`re in NH with her family at the moment. We`re heading down to Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut for a couple of days, checking out some of America`s history at places like Mystic Seaport, and then back up to the coast of NH for a relaxing day on the beach and perhaps another round of golf in this sweltering heat. Oh yeah, in a couple of weeks we`re going to take our 11y.o. boy and his cousin to Disney World before he "loses the magic". I haven`t been there in 22 years. Should be fun. After that....back to business!
