My father has finally purchased DSL.   He has been on a dial up line with a maximum of 10 hours a month worth of online time. Maybe he will start to see the new frontier we call the internet on a larger scale now. He has only used it to check email and send message… until now!

Right on Dad!

Who else is moving forward to a high speed internet connection? Better yet… who is still on dial up, and why?

I...purchased dsl for the new year. The best part - instant, continuous, full length video. "I want that download, and that download", where it used to take forever. How about the microsoft Office Accounting 2007 there. It just wasn`t possible before. Now everything I create and sell will be with dsl customers in mind. Also, without realizing, I made my screen go to large print. Suddenly StartUpNation and the 21st century is up close and personal, on demand. Good grammar, spelling, and less exclamations are more important than ever. Proofreading is easier, though, so... I may never turn this machine off. I may never get 8hrs. sleep. No more start and stop podcasts. Small business videos galore. Free at last! Free at last!

fmdchps... That`s great! I can`t wait for the entire world to get connected. Maybe people should make their monitor giant too. They might start writing without the all caps button locked, or realize grammar does have a use.

That`s too funny Vincent - my parents just got DSL too. Now my dad is all excited about "Skype" and wants to sign up for it so he can talk to anyone, anywhere. He is not even really a phone person, but he loves internet toys!

I was on dialup for a long time. I was just too cheap to pay for cable, and dsl wasn`t offered at my house. Well, finally they have begun offering it and we got it for 29.99 a month. Most places, you can get DSL for 20 per month, but you know, you have to be close to the substation, and apparently we are in the "extended" range. So we get slower service, for a higher price. How`s that for value? But really, it is still a lot faster than dialup and well worth it for as much time as I spend using it.

Christina... It`s very difficult for me to be "sold" on anything. I really don`t think I have a use for anything high tech. I am happy with my army style can opener. So when the internet came along, I was slow to attend. I first visited (not my connection or computer) the net in 1996 and didn`t have internet service until 1997. Now, I can`t imagine life without the net!

I don`t go everywhere, but when I want to find anything (answers to odd life questions , information about anything ... it`s there. I just don`t know how to prove the greatness to my father. I know his interests, and when I try to tell him about what he could use it for that involves his interests, he begins to shut down. I think it`s just information overload. Maybe next year when I see him I can have one or two locations for him to visit. Don`t let him search for his own.

Anyway. I am sure he will start using it. Like you, I am online at least 4 hours a day (much of that here.)

If your dad is anything like mine, he`ll definitely get interested with it, in his own time. When my parents first got the internet (they were on dialup), neither of them were too interested. My mom still doesn`t use it a lot  but I think my dad is on it everyday. I told him about Skype and he just went crazy with it - calling everyone and saying "hey, guess what! I am talking to you on the comptuer!" He is so funny - gotta love him.

When my dad started getting interested in stuff, I helped him out by bookmarking some pages I thought would interest him. It certainly worked well... he has tons of pages in his bookmarks now.

I`m one of those people who can barely remember what life was like without computers. We got our first computer when I was 13. My mom wanted me to be able to do my homework on it. It had a 14.4 modem in it, which I eventually upgraded to a 36.6 *L* I learned how to use the Mosaic web browser and built my first webpage on geocities, using HTML that had been taught to me by a friend`s dad, when I was about 15 (1995). So I guess I never really had to be sold on it... I`ve been a computer/internet junkie almost all my life.

I`ll admit - I`m completely and hopelessly addicted. I own a dog forum, and visit 2-3 other forums daily. I listen everyday to internet radio talk shows, and internet music stations. Before I got paid to design websites, I designed them anyway, in my free time for fun. I think I need "Internet Addicts Anonymous"
