In the mid-70`s, the U.S. economy was going through tough times.  I was overseas and was nearing the end of my active duty obligation.  I desparately wanted to get out; couldn`t stand the thought of becoming a "lifer."  Being overseas, I had no choice but to believed my parents` letters that there just weren`t any jobs back home.  I extended one year hoping things would turn around.  That extra year not only protected me from making a bad decision and perhaps avoiding unemployment, it also gave me additional time and perspective on evaluating what I did want to do when I separated from active duty.
Times are tough on the outside right now...and it`s a lot tougher than when I had to make my decision. The civilian job market is getting tougher every day.  In my state, we`re only a few layoffs away from reaching 10% unemployment.
I know it`s tough on active duty and that you`re often asked to do the impossible for what seems to be the ungrateful for very little compensation.  Even if that is the case, I`d suggest very strongly considering staying in a little while until there`s an even playing field available for your success on the outside.  If possible, use the year to complete additional education, gain another valuable skillset...or even to dwell on the course of your professional life with a little additional perspective.
There are many who do appreciate your service.  There`s also many veterans who will advise and help you when the time does come for you to walk out the gate for the final time.  Perhaps it`s best not to make that last walk just yet.
Take care..and thank you for your service.

(By the way...I ended up staying and making it a career.  I`ve since had a successful career in management at a Fortune 500 firm and have now launched my own business.)
