Brian,
First of all, do you have any experience running a club? from the looks of it... you don`t... My suggestion for you would be to wait till you`re 18, and head down to your nearest 18 and over night club and check out the scene... I know that MTV portrays the night club life as a room with a bunch of hotties dancing and you getting some action at the end of the Night...
It is not like that... I was a Club DJ for Many years... I started out at strip joint and moved on to running well know (famous) clubs in NYC... another suggestion would be to become a promoter, learn the ins and outs of putting an event together... Booking, planning, leasing, and most of all the equipment is not cheap.. for two CD/ MP3 Dj series turn-tables you are looking at about 1200 a piece... a top of the line RANE mixer goes for 1400.00 and... the list goes on and on...

Good Point Nuevolution,

Besides that-all the issues with getting a liqour license, crowd control procedures, staffing, marketing, etc.

When you become 18 or better yet 21 dabble in the business, get a first hand experience and go from there. Remember, that all this isn`t to discourage you one bit. It`s about helping you achieve your goals. Kudos for having ambition, now you just need to combine that with wisdom and experience.

Regards,

LT

Lizette,
You made a good point... The liquor license is the most expensive... then you need insurance in case someone goes postal or in case of a fire... too much liability.. why not start by renting the club first. Hold your own small gigs... and if you like the feel of it and think you can hang.. then go for it...
Tell me when you`re open for business. I`ll DJ your opening GIG for you...

Yessssssssss-go to college!

Marketing courses- advertising, media history, design basics. Business and Accounting courses, Gen Ed. (History, English, Math), and Computer Courses i.e. photoshop, illustrator, etc.

Look, I never finished college.  Now and then through my late 20`s I`ve had a few opportunities to go back to school and I did.  Each time I did, I signed on for courses that peaked my interest, like the courses I mentioned above.

I hope it helps some.

A business course would very wise because at the end thats what you are looking to get into, start at the bottom and work your way up start work collecting glasses, then behind the bar, then look at bar management.

There is lots to know before you even think about diving in the deep end.

First off, at 17, your not really allowed into clubs. I`m quite sure that that will pose a problem when it comes to ownership and management.

Clubs need many specialized and pain in the ass permits (liquor license, Cigarette license, noise permits, etc) most of these you cannot even consider getting at 17.

FYI, at 17, you cannot sign a contract. You are not legally allowed to make a legal agreement until you are at least 18 years of age.

As per the College question, Ill give you the same advice I give to everyone I know who is interested in being an entrepreneur. Tax courses, Accounting courses, Corporate law courses, Business management, etc. You don`t need a CPA or MBA, you just need the basic knowledge so you don`t get screwed over. I cannot stress the Tax courses enough, you will NEED them.

I would not say that graphic design classes are necessary.  Artists are a dime a dozen, I wouldn`t waste my time with those classes because you can hire some one else to do it for a fraction of what it would cost you (divide your hourly income as a business owner by the time spent on it, you will see).

Best lesson I ever learned was that smart people learn a bit of everything, but hire specialists to get the job(s) done.  Its worked for me.

When I was 15 some friends and I would rent out Lofts here in Manhattan.  We would then charge people $50-$75 per person to enter, we paid the promoters $5 per ticket sold. We could easily get 300 people per night. The lofts were 2,500-3,500 square feet, and we would pay $1,500 for the space per night, then pay the owner an extra $750-$1,000 to ignore the noise and keep away.

We would have a cleaning service clean the place up the morning after the party, that cost us between $250 and $500.

Total cost for the night was always under $5,000. and even if we only charged $50 per person, 300*50 = $15,000.

Renting a Club will easily cost you in excess of 10k per night. In Manhattan the cheapest one I saw was $25k per night.
