I am starting a new website where I will sell gaming computers. I have been reading a lot about SEO and there are somethings that I`m still not clear on.

I was reading somewhere that you don`t need to hire a SEO programmer because it is simple enough to do yourself. I don`t have much experience in web design, but is it simple enough for someone with no web design experience to implicate on their own. If so how would you go about doing so?

I plan on hiring a web designer is their anything I need to inform them of so I can implicate my own SEO or should they handle it?

I tried searching these questions on the forums and Google and I couldn`t find answers to these specific questions. I would appreciate any information about SEO and how to get good search results. I would like to get this information before I hire a designer.  I am currently looking for a web designer so if you could recommend anyone that could help me reach these goals I would appreciate it.

To get an example of what I am looking for design and programming wise you can go to www.dell.com, www.vigorgaming.com, or www.digitalstormonline.com.

Actually, it`s a lot like setting up a network from scratch. It`s not all that hard, you just connect a bunch of computers together and you`re done.

So I can safely assume that if I hire a designer to make my site that I can implicate SEO on my own?

If you hire a designer, there are basic on-site SEO items that they should already plan on implementing. Make sure you find out ahead of time what those items will be.

In general, when hiring a designer - ask about SEO and if it is included in their quote and what does their "SEO" include.

There are two basic parts of SEO - (1) you might be able to implement or control which is the content/text of the site and (2) the "behind the scenes" SEO which you might not be able to implement/control - the meta tags, h1, h2, links, etc. which is part of the html code.

How much or little you control / can or wish to do yourself will depend upon how much HTML knowledge you have and how the site is set-up and maintained with or without a Content Management System (CMS).

Most people who call themselves "designers" don`t do SEO. Definitely ask about it before you hire someone. Bigger companies usually have SEO experts working for them. If you want to do SEO yourself, there are some good resources on the web.

Probably the best website for general advice on SEO (and also on what to look out for when hiring an SEO company) can be found on Search Engine Watch. SEO Moz has a good article on what counts for search engine rankings search ranking factors. If you want to check the ranking of your website for its search engine ranking with different keywords, what is my search rank is a good place to look.

Most SEO tactics can be done yourself (except if you do not have the time or patient to do it).

SEO consultants are just that: "Consultants". They know a lot about SEO tactics and are always on top of the latest search engine algorithms.

Nonetheless, most of the information can be obtained from SEO watch and other SEO sites.

A few things to keep in mind:

* SEO is a continuous process. Once you get to where you want to be in the search engine rankings, it does not stop. You MUST continue with the SEO of your pages, otherwise other sites will win you over.
* Anyone who promises they can get you on top in a short amount of time, is just outright lying to you. It takes time (sometimes several months to achieve results).
* Before picking your keywords, do some good research to find out which keywords are being used by searchers.
* Pick keywords which do not have lots of competition. (i.e don`t pick game computers, since you will most likely never get on top.. .maybe pick something like game computers [your state])
* Concentrate on a few keywords and optimize your pages accordingly.
* Stick with a "theme" - this is key...

I hope the above is helpful for you.

P.S. - I myself used to be an SEO consultant... I have helped 100`s of companies get high rankings. I do not practice SEO consultancy any more.

Let`s look at it like this:
  1. Do It Yourself (DIY) - it`s not really free because you have to learn and implement at a very slow pace and you WILL make a lot of mistakes, or at the very least, won`t take advantage of enough SEO techniques
  2. Hiring a basic SEO guy - Gets you leaps and bounds beyond your knowledge and you`ll see results.
  3. Hiring a SEO/SEM firm to do consistent optimization will cost a lot but hopefully will provide lasting and GROWING results.
I`d say start with #2.

There are certain macro elements a designer, if they build your site, will need to incorporate while progamming it.  These include tags, image tags, and other site seo elements (article).  You need to think about these and the keywords that will be used as well as your strategy before you even plan your site.
