Shoe is right >> Turn the gate keeper into a friend and customer... They will go to work for you! It may take a little while but when you schedule the next appointment and you tell them that you will make time if anyone else there need an oil change as well >> I have seen them email everyone in the company and end up getting you 2 or 3 more customers happily!! When that happens I write up their invoice and total it with a big "Thank You!" and give them the oil change for free! It is worth having an inside person willing to help you market you service...
when you do that >> Don`t look at the "right Now" money >> If you get 3 customer >> that is going to equal 3-4 changes a year per customer Or $300 to $400 a year... Plus the referrals they can provide....  This service is infectious >>> People love to get spoiled and pampered... Be that person willing to do that!

I just wanted to thank everyone in this discussion, especially Oilgut and Shoemakersp.  I found your stories very inspiring and helpful.  I am looking into the business and found so many people that don't want to encourage it and put my ambition down.  But it's such a breath of fresh air to see people that actually want to help and inspire each other.  You people are one in a million.  Thank you guys!  Wish all the best and success to you all!

Shoemakersp, Oilgut, Hi everyone,

I'm starting my MOC business, excited and worried!!!
I've typed some points below about my status, have a look and let me know if it's a good opportunity for me to start or not:

1- I'm currently working as a Creative Director but I want to start my own journey and test my luck
2- My MOC business will be almost the first in the country
3- I'll start the business with less than half of my capital
4- Starting with one Van for around 3 month to check then I'll get one more
5- Because of my advertising background I'll be doing sales, marketing and designs

This is my dream, and I feel that I will succeed and grow. AM I DREAMING? :)

Hi Rami,

All roads to success start from a dream! From what I see it looks like you won't be  in debt starting out. And you have experience inthe advertising field which is a BIG plus!!

Hello

I was wondering if you took the drive time from job to job into account.  Employees get paid from the time they punch in until end of their shift.  Did you price your service with that in mind?

Hope you do well.

Melinda,  I've went through your website before and It was really helpful thanks for everything.

Well, I won't be in debt yes but resposible of spending our savings :) thats why I'm trying to reduce the expenses in the begining to minimize the risk.

John, you're right and actually this my daily discussion with my wife!

Early 2009 I took a hard lesson from the global recession, simply I found that being employed is not safe for my family, even being succesful at it or a hard worker, it can happen any second and you can lose everything + your income will be always limited.

So I took the decision to start my own business, I picked MOC because I love car restorations and mechanics and this what I want to do. Guess I have to try my luck!!

Thanks guys,

Rami

Hello, I found this forum on the first search for MOC, so I think I'm headed in the right direction. I to want to start a mobile oil change service business. I am already self employed in the construction trades and just burnt out on the market flucuations with the economy and how cheap people have gotton. I believe the way to live is to be self employed but have a business that is as most recession proof as it can be. The MOC would fit me just right, I love working on cars and it doesn't get simpler than this ( besides the marketing side of course). I was even more inspired by reading this blog and actually seeing good advaice for once from people who have started from zero and built up a sucessfull business. I am in So Cal and know there is a need here. I have a qouple questions. 1. Oilguy built his own system and that is the route I decided before I even found this blog, any pointers on the vacuum/ pressure sytem?  2. What are the basic essentials to have for filters, there are alot of different ones but theres got to be the must have standards to carry. 3. I have seen your guys post for average ticket amount, but whats your average take home after exspenses? I really want to start out on the best foot forward and have learned alot from everyone here. Thanks for the informative blog and I hope to contribute on my success and learned knowledge along the way.

Kevin.

You guys are on to something convenient.  As a consumer and busy-body I would love to have someone come take care of an oil change while I'm at work or home, SO handy!  You could keep track of your previous customers with a simple contact management program and call to remind them if they're due for a little maintenance.  Good luck!
