I am starting a holding company. Has anyone on the forum successfully funded their start-up by creating an online store and selling branded merchandise (your start-up company's brand) to raise money for operations and salaries? If yes, are you willing to share your experience?

Not sure I understand your question.  Selling online is a great way to target customers worldwide - instead of being held within a local area.

If your online business can help support your overhead - then by all means.  Most retailers or even manufacuters have online sites to support their brink and mortar businesses - look at walmart online or target online, etc.

But, if your doing an online site that is not related to your core business just to bring in revenue - you are wasting your time and should focus on growing your core business.  If you cannot grow your core business but find success online - then your core business should be the online business.
