A website needs members and activities before it`s official launch, because it would be uninteresting for every new visitor, if there are no activities.
A possibility is for example, to offer free premium accounts until 1000 members are registered.

Do you know any other possibilities?

One option is to open the site up to a select group of people that are interested in your niche to get them using it before the official launch.  How do you find these people?  Have them sign up.

Put up a temporary teaser site while the real site is being built.  This way you can advertise what is coming, get the URL out there, stir up interest and start an email list.  For those that sign up, you can have a few questions in the form to look for your more targeted audience.  You can choose to give those people the first go at the site.  Or give access to the whole list but then you also know which users are even more targeted.

Glad to help out.  It`s the strategy we`re using with Zingerding.com.  And people are signing up!

Yeah, it is my site.  I have a partner and it`s in the works.

What`s your site/business about?

Google for forums in your niche and then post in them, using your site as a signature.

Well done, good luck with it.

Our site isn`t created as yet. It contains a very special type of auction. We`re preparing the businessplan right now.

@jillybeans:

I will do that, also creating signatures in the emails. But it takes a lot of time and its questionable, if this really works.
