I am tossing a new idea through my mind, here are the basics...

Upscale children`s clothing line.
Kid`s sizes 2 through 16.
Made in the USA.

What are some of the major hurdles in finding contract manufacturing, designing, sourcing material, etc.?

I would like to hear from someone who has brought a clothing item to market.

Also, what may be a better way of marketing it? Wholesale, web based or even direct sales (home party, like Pampered Chef, etc.)?

I think your biggest hurdle is going to be competition. Upscale children`s clothing has been pretty well done to death, near as I can tell.

Very true.... but.

So have toys, cooking accessories and oh my God what about vitamins and homeopathics?

I guess I am leaning toward a completely unique line, with a direct sales approach.

The model appears to be reasonable for this application since any successful direct sales company`s ideal product is a niche product, with universal appeal and is ultimately a consumable.

Or am I completely wacked out of my mind.....again?

James, how are you? I haven`t seen you for a while!

PriotyMatt,
You definately have to be creative when opening an upscale childrens boutique. How about an upscale look without the upscale price. My daughter who is almost 5 loves clothes. I definatley try to find her unique outfits but gosh to spend 100 plus on a set is too much. Can you find a supplier who offers boutique type quality clothes at a decent price so that you can offer that to folks. I thing that would be appealing.  Modern Tots is also a great website, they don`t offer clothes i don`t believe but neat stuff for kids.

This type of biz is all abt the design, or abt a "hook". I think you`d need an interesting angle that differentiates you from all the other children`s clothing designers out there. And the designs need to be very unique and of course, well made. Clothing is one tough biz and the market is super saturated so find your angle (much more specific than "upscale") and make your mark!
