Christmas is the time where everyone is good natured, even the short tempered act like they never raised their voices in their entire lives. Capitalise on this if you are a good graphic designer and make your own Christmas cards. Buy a good color printer; cartridges and paper and market yourself with fliers and posters. If you're cheap and have nice cards you can actually end up getting orders from stationery stores.

Installing Christmas lights is an opportunity to be pounced upon. When Christmas approaches families are busy trying to beautify the house in a splash of bright lights. Buy your stocks 4-6months before the festive season to get the cheapest prices and you'll be able to make more money than established businesses. But to get an extra edge it would be wise to be consistent and good at what you do.

Wow these are all great business ideas for the holiday season. I did not realize there are many small business you could start up with the holiday season. I think I like the idea of baking some goodies and fruit cakes and I could sell them to my friends and family.

I like the idea of a shopping service.  Even with today's online shopping capabilities, not to mention the recession, its amazing how many higher net worth folks will pay for concierge level service.  They provide the list and the $$ --- you deliver the goods and collect commissions.

also --- anything you could sell retail, such as several of the items above (e.g. gift baskets).  Remember, the great majority of retail sales occur this month.  So the need for extra money during the holidays can be met with the outsized demand for gifts, especially in the $10-$25 price range.  Crafts are a great idea.
