We are in the mid stages of site development and wanted to impose upon you for a few minutes of your time.

We are looking for an objective opinion on our concept and implementation from an investor`s perspective. We do have a business plan in development but are not quite ready to present.

Interestingly enough, we have been seeing traffic growth coming from 28 countries so far and we have done nothing to promote it yet other than working with some hospitals and retirement centers over the last few months...word of mouth perhaps?

Again, I am only asking for your opinions in concept and presentation.

Hi Kathy,

Thank you for the observation. We have temporarily disabled all browsers except IE through the weekend as the site uses ActiveX controls and an XML parser that is incompatible with FireFox, Netscape, Opera...etc.

We are working on this diligently as we are aware that people do use products other than Microsoft.

Also, we are having to program functions to provide CSS overrides for the other browsers as each one implements CSS a little differently and seriously effects the page layout and flow.

All these issues should be corrected over the weekend.

Again, I thank you for your time!

Same problem here, so I tried it in IE and it worked. Not a good idea to just ignore the FireFox community. :-) I wonder what happens on a Mac?

The site works in IE, but it`s problematic in that the font size is very small for senior eyes. You might want to set your size in a relative unit (maybe "em" sizes) so that the browser maintains a relative size for each viewer.

It`s a great idea, that`s for sure! The growing senior population is clearly a target demographic for all sorts of reasons. I`m thinking you might want to consider some Tutorials to go along with the site. "How to Make a Blog," "How to Email," and so on, to help people who missed the technology revolution.

Your news feed could do better by focusing more closely on targeted (relevant) news. Anyone can find out the headlines with no problem. But it`s not that easy to find stories that directly affect seniors. Social Security, Medicare, Health Issues, Nutrition studies, and so on, all would make more sense.

I see you do have the tabs that focus on pertinent topics, and that`ll work. But I`m thinking more of your landing page. That`s your main attractor and selling point. If people like that, they`ll explore the rest of the site.

All in all it`s a good concept, but the site seems to run slow. The color scheme is a bit weird, but maybe that`s only my own taste. I`m thinking it`s a bit dark and gloomy and if senior citizens are wishing to be lively and zesty, that`s a bit of a contradiction, don`t you think?

Hi Craig,

OK, now we`re getting somewhere with objective critiques...and I really appreciate it!

As to the font, using "em" sizing is definitely valid and one we haven`t considered...yet. Out of curiosity, what resolution are you running? We have provided a Page Zoom feature just above the CitiClique module on the left that magnifies the site. "em" font size...well, there goes my weekend...thanks alot!

Regarding relevant news, the CitiClique module once finished will allow a user to select a State and City. Then when selecting a News or Housing category...etc, the page will provide localized information for the selected location and more targeted categories. You are absolutely right...finding sources for those topics is very difficult!

The "running slow" issue...getting decent traffic is putting a strain on the server. We are looking into acquiring multiple servers to distribute processes accross. Right now, the site, database services, email and webservices are all running on one machine. Baaad....as traffic is picking up and there are alot of internal services as well as Ads coming from multiple sources. Not to mention the overhead of .Net`s viewstate.

Tutorials? Yep, working on them as we speak. Unfortunately, it`s a one-man show at the moment as far as site design and programming goes. Why didn`t the powers that be add another 10-12 hours in a day? 24hr days are not long enough

Regarding the "dark and gloomy" color scheme...hmmm, good point! We haven`t had any negative feedback on that as of yet...until you brought it up...point well taken. Hmmm, I`ll have to try some other color scheme variations.

Whew...like they say..."careful what you ask for"! All of your points are taken to heart. May I impose upon you at the beginning of next week to run through it again once we`ve addressed these issues?

So much for playing at the beach this weekend!

Caio,

I have a 19" LCD panel at 1280x1024. I`m accustomed to compensating for small fonts, and routinely compare what I see with Kathy`s 17" CRT at 1024x768. I used to use "small" and "medium" as my relative font sizes, but that wasn`t as easy to control as "em" sizes. Nowadays, I`m using 1.0em for the lead paragraph, then 0.85em for main content.

I`m also using 140% line spacing, and that seems to work nicely on either monitor. Easy enough to change in the CSS sheets. Oh, and I boosted the after-paragraph spacing a bit to cover the additional line spacing.

Regarding the 10-12 additional hours, I believe you can purchase Daylight Carbon Credits from many sources that use fewer hours in a day. Banks and real estate companies right now have an abundance of these credits. Do some research, and I`m sure you`ll be able to work out a decent exchange rate.

I do get the idea, though of being the one-man show. It`s a trick bag. All you can do is just take it one step at a time, and try not to have an absolute time set for your "go live" moment. As the brilliant philosopher, Anonymous, once said: "If you really want to give God a belly laugh, just make a plan!" :-)

Later, when you have the site running comfortably, keep in mind video tutorials. They`re going to be a lot easier for seniors to deal with, I suspect. If they`re done well, they wouldn`t be expensive to do either.

Ya with Firefox 3.0 successful launch, you have to adapt or lose users.

Personally with me Mash-Up sites are getting old real fast. You should start adding your own content fast, because all that news can be found on the sites that actually create it and they are usually the ones that have all the web traffic and keep them.

Just out of curiosity .... why use functions that only one browser can handle, then have to find a work around for other browsers? Are the functions that important to the site to create that much additional work, testing, and potential issues?
