Should you hire an intern or an employee?

Hello everyone my name is Leon

I'm currently working on my first online business website.  The site is going to launch in Jan and i know i will need serious help to maintain and update the website.  Also i will need marketing help.  Should i hire an intern to help me or a actual employee? Or should i go with freelancing?  What is the benefits and costs of each?

Great question!  There are pros and cons to all options.

As a start-up you have no $$...and it sounds like you may have no skills in regards to creating a website.

Without $$ you cannot hire an employee or freelancer (unless you are willing to take a loan).

But without a lot of skills it may be difficult to hire an intern as he or she is doing an intern to "learn."


All that being said college educated students with information technology degrees know a lot about helping you get your website set-up.  If it's  a simple website chances are they can help you get it up and running.  And many are willing to work for free in order to build their portfolio of websites.

If you require more involved development work, shopping cart and autoresponder integration, an intern may not be the best choice.  These projects require much more understanding of how these systems all integrate.

These are just a few of the things you need to consider.  The last thing I would consider is your timing.  You say your site will launch in January?  Many internships fall on a semester basis which means your intern may not start until early to mid-January as most schools are finishing up their semester now.  That being said there are a lot of students on winter break looking for an "externship" (think, mini-internship) that might be able to take on your project and complete it before they return to school in January.

Personally, I'd hire a freelancer or intern.

I'm in freelance design, so I can tell you first hand, you'll probably get more bang for your buck with a freelancer.  You don't have to pay overhead and depending on how you set up your contract, some months you may not even have to pay anything.

The nice thing about hiring an intern is that they will likely (should be) less expensive than a freelancer; however, remember you get what you pay for.  It's great to give students experience and in return many will work for next to nothing.

It comes down to how much you want to pay and what type of quality you're looking for.

No matter what you decide to do, know that the IRS has set rules for determining if a person is an employee or intern. Many people violate these rules by classifying an employee as an intern to avoid paying wages. Read the IRS rules first. Then decide if the person will be an employee or intern. Note: Interns are generally brought on board to learn a trade, not provide uncompensated labor.

Hiring an intern enables you to bring in a new employee who works diligently for little or no money. Interns possess this mindset because they are looking for any opportunity to showcase their talents and hopefully jump start their careers. As a result, hiring an intern greatly increases the productivity of your company because you are able to get more work done everyday without denting your budget.
