Definitely optimize your site for local search terms if you are targeting a geographic area. In most cases, the generic term will be so competitive that you will never show up on a search result. Plus, most people would type in the city into their search if they're looking for a local provider.

You can do some research to find out which keyword phrases people are using to find those types of products/services. Then incorporate the variations of those words, along with your city/town, into your website content, headers, links and meta-tags.

Also, make sure to add your company's address into Google Maps so you'll show up in proximity to the customer's search.

For our local photography studio, it definitely makes sense to optimize for local.  One other thing to consider is that adding landmarks or aliases to your pages can make a big difference in whether you get found when people type those places in their search.

Yes most definitely.  Local SEO is just as important.  You can find out how to do this on some video tutorials on youtube.com/nlprofits. You can also find different resources that you may need to do many kinds of internet marketing at nlprofits.com

Small businesses should only market where their customers are.  If their customers are local - then they should market locally in ways and on media that their customers use to find information.

It is simple marketing 101 - go where your customers are and put a message in front of them (or search results) where they look for information and that resonates with them.

if your target market is just a particular area i.e. Christmas Gifts in Florida

then its best to focus your seo on local listings, classifieds and include Florida as a keyword

I think the way Google has integrated local search into results really makes it imperative that small businesses optimize for local search.

As others have said, it really depends on the business. It's often easier to rank for "Indianapolis Carpet Cleaning," for example, than "Carpet Cleaning."

I'd add that no matter the scope of your business, you should definitely network and try to rank locally.

I think, it really depends on your business. As a web design company, I do business globally, but in marketing, its better to concentrate on a 100 mile radius of my office first.
