Paula,

I agree, those sites are just sales letters in my opinions. They were used and made popular by people offering e-books a few years back. The never ending scrolling is insane!!!

The terms used in Internet marketing are a joke sometimes and choosing one to describe your service is tough. Microsites have been gaining in popularity and have been used by big companies like Nike, Ford and others.

I`m glad we are on the same page.

Can you recommend a URL that goes further into detail about the "microsite" type that you`re using? I really did only come across the never-ending-scroll when I searched earlier. That technique could be useful for some of my clients.

Everybody is talking these days about "viral marketing." But what`s ironic, is that anyone with a domain name is already deeply involved with exactly that....the viral spread of the domain across the world wide web.

Viral marketing is not letting something passively spread across the internet. It is a targeted plan for increasing traffic from specific sources using word of mouth marketing.

The microsite marketing technique is misused by many people as a way to stick you with that long sales letter, yes.

BUT it is also used correctly by many people. Think of movie sites ... one company, like a big studio, makes a unique URL for every one of their movies (products) to draw buzz about it. And they make the site nice, follow rules of good design, etc, to attract visitors. So you can go to a mini site for a movie like "The Dark Knight" and still get linked back to the parent company, Warner Brothers.

I totally understand what you`re saying though, Paula.

As for the original question, keep them separate.

Examples:

Craig Newmark of Craigslist has his own blog, but it`s not on Craigslist.
Bob Parsons of GoDaddy has his own blog, but it`s not on GoDaddy.

I think these topics are totally separate and should be kept separate.

HOWEVER I think it would be a good idea to put ads for your e-comm site on your blog. That would help out your e-comm traffic.

...and Patrick Byrne of Overstock.com has his blog about Russian mafia infiltration of Wall Street separate. It didn`t used to be though, so that`s perhaps a cue.

Here`s a question, would a subdomain count as a separate domain?

BTW — Nikole, congrats :)

[BRIEF TAGENT CONTINUED]

Rich — Patrick Byrne is one of a small cadre of business leaders whose work I follow because I am so deeply impressed with their intelligence & integrity. Many of these have had some sort of personal experience with capital-`C` Corruption and their insights provide a more accurate picture of how the economy functions than the mass media can provide. Patrick Byrne deserves every award and medal under the sun for taking such risks to share his knowledge.

I have not heard the radio shows with him on... I don`t think I see them in the feeds. I will certainly track those down and give a listen! When were they recorded?
