I chose a name for my new online store but another online company overseas has the same name and selling the same products. Our name is different by one more letter on the end of the last name (ex. lockett instead of locket). Should I keep this name or think of another.

Hello Will,

I would come up with another name and avoid any complications with the other company.

When you are building a brand I think it`s a good thing to be very different from the rest.

Good Luck

Well, you could keep the name, invest lots of money, build up a customer base, and have a complex business system in place. But what will you do when you get a "cease-and-desist" letter  from the other company`s attorneys telling you that you must stop using your business name or face a legal action?

Since you are selling the same thing...it is probably not a good idea.
Good luck!

will, while it`s easy to say change it...you might want to check in with the intl company to see how long they have been in business, how established they are....and "where are they going"? are they a strong, legit company that will be around or is it a business that will disappear tomorrow.  is your business built on a stronger foundation that will last much longer? it might be more work that you want to do...but i simply suggest this in case you have already spent some time and money establishing your business. so why not just start a small discussion?

i have a friend who was in a similar situation as you. he contacted the company who conflicted with his and together they were able to resolve the matter. one paid the other off to pursue another name as compensation for wasted time and resources.  something to think about?
