I am new to sales and was wondering if when you call someone to set an appointment if you try and sell them over the phone or just trying to setup an appointment.  This would basically be cold calling so I am wondering how to go about doing this.  What has worked for some of you out there?

I`ve done cold calls.  Many business people do not like someone just showing up unannounced and expecting to be seen.  These people have their own schedules to keep.  Setting time aside to see an unannounced sales person puts them behind schedule.

I`ve always called in advance and set up an appointment.  This way, my prospective new customer has time to talk to me about my product.

Also, make sure you`ve researched you prospective customer.  You should be able to tell him or her how your product will benefit their operation.
