Due to large dynamic pages and the ability to develop some of the autometic functionality dynamically, large shopping cart or other ecommerce website can take advantage of this. Below are some tips which is more important to develop for ecommerce website which sells product in bunch.

 

Canonicalization: Most of the ecommerce websites have large no. of products and its filter criteria to filter according to the type of products. For example for general laptop category page, there might be filter criteria as per its brands, processor speed, memory of the ram etc. According to these filter parameter, new pages being generated to display products as per user selection and these pages can get conflicted and considered as duplicate with original pages you have developed for promotion. You must define canonical URL to all these filtered pages.

 

Automatic Title Tag Creation:  I have observed in many websites products pages without proper title tag. Due to large no. of products we have to retrieve the value of from database and have to set it in its title tag dynamically. With current technology it is easier to specify dynamic Meta tags from database.

 

Inter linking :  iF you want to take advantage of the size of your website, efficient internal linking between pages is necessary where you can use your sense and can define criteria for inter linking between pages with help of developer.

 

Url Structure: You must accurately analyze the URL structure of your product pages and main category pages. If the product pages are not being cached and indexed easily, you must adopt the url redirection or re writing and the same way for main category pages.

 

Above are some tips which suit specially for ecommerce website. There are other tips as well like content optimization and basic on page changes which I am not specifying here.

SEO tips for ecommerce websites:

  1. Create unique product descriptions. It isn’t an easy job if you have a lot of products, but it’s well worth it. A lot of sites that sell branded products have a tendency to run the descriptions from the manufacturer’s database — which can mean a lot of duplicate content. So you can really set your site apart by having unique content.

     

  2. Let users leave reviews on products. This is not only great from a conversion perspective but if there are reviews on a product page, this is again more unique and original content.

     

  3. Include social buttons on your product pages — let people ‘like’ specific products right from on the site etc. The Google +1 button, Facebook sharing/like buttons and Twitter sharing options all increase social interaction with your website and this is now vital in SEO terms as well.

     

  4. Take advantage of the long tail. There may be smaller numbers of searches for your very specific product names, but if you have thousands of products, that soon adds up! And users making very specific searches are likely to convert to sale at a high rate. Including titles and meta descriptions with the relevant product names on your product pages is a great place to start and adding unique content with the product name mentioned is fab too! You could find you appear highly in search for specific product searches simply off the back of good on site optimisation.

     

  5. Implement Schema mark up. Both Google and Bing respect Schema mark up and this is particularly important for product pages. You can tag all manner of different page elements, including reviews, product names and brand names. This could have a massive impact on how your listings are displayed in the SERPS, which could in turn increase click through rate.

The first things about SEO for ecommerce is that it starts with the product. It is no good trying to sell cars to people looking for coffee cups. You have to make sure you product has a market first. 

Second, you have to give your product the display it deserves. There is no good hiding these products away.

I like how you describe the social media marketing and its mood. Just because of the nature of these sites, I think if they help you sell anything, it will be just prolonged while SEO attracts more targeted potential buyers.

I have gone through your tips and its really very much helpful to optimize an E-commerce website. Its bit different to optimize E-commerce website as compared to other website because E-commerce website having having so many different dynamic pages for many different products along with filtration facility.
