Actually, some ecommerce solutions have the capability that enables customers to place an order based upon various options. Common options are size and color, but they can be almost anything.
 
ZenCart (an open source ecommerce program) calls these "attributes"... and you, as the site owner can define and name the attributes and price your products based upon those attributes.

Roland,

Thats a good point, and certainly a good alternative. the trick to making that sort of cart interactive would be to some how get those choices to corespond to specific images. Another words I would like to have the customer see the changes visually as the choices are made. Any ideas how that may be acomplished?

Each attribute can have an image associated with it - in Zen Cart

I truly believe consumers want to have the freedom to get what they want and are usually willing to pay for it when they can see it on their own, not just in words or specifications list. With that said, the search will continue.
