Does anyone know the legal ramifications for selling contact info? Is there a market for a database of this size? I have been sitting on this for a few years and wondered if there is any equity in it. If anyone has any insight, I would sure appreciate the info.

IMO a database with 100K+ names is worthless unless there is a common thread to them, they are all teens interested in gaming, all seniors looking for investment opportunities, all entrepreneurs with a specific type of small business i/e printing, restaurants, net sales etc. Unless there is a common thread AND they have specifically stated that they are interested in receiving info from you about xyz the list is worthless.

If you don`t have those two common thread and stated interest from the list members, why spend a dime on it? Anybody can get a bigger list from the phone book for free.

I believe that it is unethical to sell or transmit in any other way any of my contacts` information.  Plus I make a promise to folks who contact me that their information is safe with me.

the database I compiled are all Construction Companies, Architects, Engineers, etc... I made no promise as to privacy and for the most part their information is all public domain (ie. business directories) I took the information from hundreds of sources and put them together into one place- An ACT! database.but they do have the common thread you were speaking of.

If their info is in the public domain, then I don`t see a problem.  Who would buy it though if it`s already available elsewhere for free?

It is info collected from different sources and put into one place. It took years to compile all of this information and would be useful to anyone who`s target sales audience is construction and architectural companies. It includes address, phone, fax, email, etc...

Sounds like a good asset to have. Good luck with it.

I would say that, the older the data, the less likely it will get a premium. If I`m getting 3-5 year old contact information when I`m purchasing a lis, then I expect to pay pennies. Fresh data - verified within the last 3 mths, for example - would commend a premium.

In the architectural/engineering world I would consider the data to be up to date and the GC`s I would consider to be 90% up-to-date.
