There is more to life than search engine rankings.

The flip side of article marketing in forums is that it tends to be a turn off for regular users. Without a strong base of loyal users, online communities fail.

I don`t care about the discussion of opinion vs. not. It really doesn`t matter to me.

What I like to talk about it geeky web stuff ... how article marketing can help your business, how it can hurt your reputation, how search engine placement is not the end-all important factor in your web site, and how loyal users build strong communities. These are all great topics for those people on SUN who are just starting out and learning, and hopefully we can expand upon those in the future!

"article" or "opinion" When on the internet (mass amounts of false information as well as true) and read a post from any user, I don`t set the words in my head as "fact." It doesn`t matter to me if the words are part of an "article" or just a persons rambling post.

Remember what you have been taught. "don`t believe everything you have seen on TV." That goes for reading on the internet and hearing.

I do agree nhgnikole... I believe you stated it clearly... the point of a post is to discuss topics found elsewhere. Those topics are typically related to the forum gatherings purpose.

The best way to stop a post from taking on it`s own life is to stop posting to it. Remember that other thing we have been taught? "If you can`t say something nice, don`t say anything at all." It doesn`t mean you can`t debate. It just means you cannot let it get personal and cause direct attacks. To say, "I just don`t agree with that idea." (and stop posting about it...) is not the same as saying, "Your idea is stupid. It will never work..." (...and on and on you go.)

So... Secret or not. Moderators are required to ensure a particular atmosphere and subject matter to this area. It`s obvious by viewing all the deleted advertising, that we can`t keep this environment the way the creators envision it without moderators.

Joel and Rich...this post is written especially for you and intended for your feedback.

Sometimes I have to scratch my head and wonder, "is this really an entreprenurial forum?" Where`s the tolerance for different types of content?

I consistently post articles on other top forums and they have stimulated some wonderful two-sided conversations. For example:

http://www.youngentrepreneur.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2008 1

http://www.selfstartersweeklytips.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t= 17699

http://www.internetbasedmoms.com/bb/how-to-put-yourself-in-t he-spotlight-vt34525.html

And yet an article I wrote that had absolutely nothing to do with marketing or entrepreneurship was accepted here:

http://startupnation.com/forums/5968/1/1

Doesn`t make any sense. And while I could easily present dozens of other examples, the point is, the members and moderators of those forums don`t view my articles with extreme prejudice.

Sometimes the members and moderators of those forums agree with my position, sometimes they don`t. But at least those forums are open to discussing the content of my articles. After all, isn`t that what forums are designed for - discussion?

If other well-established, reputable forums don`t have a problem discussing the content of my articles...why should this one?

If  you`re going to allow some content and exclude others, you really don`t have an "open" forum," now do you?

Every forum is not alike.

Every site is not alike.

It really depends on the audience, the market, the traffic base, the theme of the site, etc.
I would be the first to say that SUN is unique in their positioning. And I respect them for that. Who wants to be like all the hundreds of other boards out there when you can be different?

It`s not about what everyone else is doing in true entrepreneurship. It`s about taking your own path. Onwards and upwards!!

The basis for any forum will ALWAYS be discussion. I applaud and respect what  Rich and Jeff have created here, but the bottom line is, it`s still a forum and it`s all about discussion.

Those aforementioned forums are all JUGGERNAUTS. They are the best of the best. They are professionally run and moderated. They are open-minded and fair and they  let everyone have their say to a point.

Rich, be different yes - but also be smart and model the hugely successful forums that have come before you. Learn from them. There`s a reason they`re so succesful. They welcome everyone`s opinions and content with open arms - and that`s a good thing!

Content prejudice should not be tolerated in any forum - especially by the moderators!

The fact of the matter is, it`s a doggone interesting thread! Otherwise, it would have died a long time ago.
