Hey thompsonuw! I believe that I can help.....

There are a number of things that you can do. The first thing you wanna do is grab a URL that is as keyword rich as possible. If you do iPhone repair in D.C., an example could be:

http://www.dciphonerepair.com

Then you want to immediately grab yourself a Google Places (Google "google places" and sign up), a Google Plus Page, and Get your site VERY acquainted with Google Webmaster Tools. (Do some searching for Google Analytics/Google Webmaster, ect....)

Another GREAT thing to do is check out Google Trends. This site will show you what search queries are popular. My company does iPhone repair in the DC/NOVA area, one of the most popular trends in this industry is simply "iPhone Repair" or "iPhone Screen Repair".

After all this is said and done, you want to get on EVERY SINGLE business directory that you can find (i.e. YellowPages), and you want to make sure that the data is CONSISTENT across each directory.

Concerning your business website: Make it more TEXT centric than IMAGE centric (this is where i screwed up miserably, see: http://www.ineedzoe.com). Make sure your site is KEYWORD RICH  in a natural way.

Get on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Also, get as many back links to your site as possible. Get people to review your site in places like Yelp, Google Places, Yahoo, ect.... Also, you want to list on Bing as well.

SEO is a full time job, I have been doing my own. I intend to get Google AdWords going for me, as well as CityGrid (these two are paid ad services)....

I think a healthy mixture of investment/free tools is the way to go....

God speed friend.
