One gateway page branching off into 3 sections. Better SEO-wise if they are subdirectories, or subdomains? Does it matter?

Subdomains are generally seen as unique entities by the search engines.  So, it would be better to use subdirectories, unless there is an inherent reason to separate the pages from the main site.

I go for subdirectories. But take same amount of research to choose subdirectory name as you would to look for a domain name. www.example.com/mybusiness, would help `mybusiness` to act as one of the most strongest keyword for your site.

It doesn`t matter.  I personally prefer to keep it straight forward and just use the subdirectories.  The sub domain route is typically used for large amounts of data planned for that area.

It DOES matter.

By using subdirectories, you are adding content to your main domain.  This will help the overall authority of your main domain.

By using subdomains, you will not be helping your main domain.  You are, in essence, setting up an entity unique from your main domain.

this is great info. In the past I have used subdomains a lot because it keeps things more organized on the server but for this particular site SEO is key. Thanks you guys!

Use subdirectories/internal pages rather than subdomains. Webosis is right. Subdomains are treated as another fish food.

I advise you not to. Forget subdomains. It has just been told officially by Google that they will treat subdomains really nasty from now on, so if you want to rank with subdomains you won`t be able to do it so easily anymore. Maybe you`ve seen lately that Google has drastically reduced the no of results it shows. I would give you more details but I have to run in my 4 days vacation in the mountains now.
