The search engines are yielding higher rank to those site with keyword enhanced url`s.  This is true.  But as a precaution.... make sure that you are not using any response redirects from the enhanced url to another site and or make sure that the enhanced url is not a clone copy of your master site [duplicate content filter].
As always design your site to be user friendly and focus on content, internal site links, quality meta title tags and quality back links.

There is a much larger task afoot than Search Engine Optimization and its techniques.  I will ask:  "What is more important, ranking or traffic?"

Do you really need ranking and search engine optimization techniques to get you traffic and business?  No, not really.  But you do need good marketing plan.

Yes, I understand SEO is a part of marketing.  But it is not the only facet of a marketing plan you should be concerned with.

If it is not for the traffic, and hopefully the resulting sales the traffic generates, frankly, ask yourself what are you doing this for?  Focus on your goals, and all of the marketing efforts you can use to help you attain your goals.  And if you get rankings, OK.  If you gain sales, that`s great!

Great post and not only for newbies! Off-site SEO has always been my weak spot, until I decided to focus on getting quality backlinks (from high PR, trusted sites). It works like a charm!

One thing I`ve never had much success is with directory submissions. I heard Google doesn`t value those as much as it used to, but I don`t know if that`s true. I prefer article marketing. It usually brings me good, stable results.

Good SEO work is, unfortunately, not cheap because it is time intensive.  If you learn to do it yourself you will reap years of rewards rather that piles of canceled checks. Plus, only you really know your business so you will wind up doing a lot of the work.  Look for a mentor or a coach to help you smooth out the rough spots as you learn.  Or, prepare to pay for it.

Very nice!  A lot of good info.  I followed it and found that my site map had errors!  thanks!

I do my own SEO and it is easy and free.  Just look for industry specific direcories.  They help a lot.

I did my own web page as well, let me know what you think.

Thanks again!

Great overview article on SEO. Thanks for sharing. One thing I would add is that when optimizing your site, don't try too hard to "win" at the search engine game. First and foremost, build a quality, informative website (with all of the keywords, meta tags, etc. in place) but one that has the right marketing message to SELL -- our ultimate goal. Why drive traffic if you can't convert the prospects to customers? Then use various methods (article writing, link-building, advertising, social media, PR etc.) to help build your web traffic. Good luck everybody!
