Well said Heather! I have had quite some negative feedbacks from some very seasoned SCORE counselors. However, I realized that they did have some rather resourceful information between their discouraging words. I undersatnd that they may not be aware of how things work in the world of technology, therefore, they are limitted in their advice. I took the best of what they had to share and researched the rest on my own. I also found that the local Small Business Development Centers are quite resourceful.

Went to visit score today and told them all the plans I had for a business I`m very excited about.  I encountered 2 very old men who told me (in not so certain terms) that there was no way I could get a loan and that I am crazy to start such a grand endeavor.  They said I should start real small (I`m looking for 50,000 not 1.2 million) and that I need to change my marketing strategy.  When I asked them if any of them had any experience in the food and beverage industry, they both replied....no I`m a banker.  So I told them, how do you know anything about marketing a food and beverage product if you were a banker?  They both gave me a weird look and said nothing.  When I asked if they could help me with my business plan, they both said......check the website.  If anyone has any other ideas of where to go for advice, I would greatly appreciate it.  I would not recommend score to anyone.

I agree I went and felt I was sitting in front of the three blind mice and they said no I could not make it and go get a job. They were to old and felt they were the only people that had all the questions and answers .It was a waste of time going to them.

Meeting with members from SCORE is a waste of time.   you need to find a mentor or a group of mentors who will actually pursue your vision.  When I started my business i also met with two SCORE members - both older, retired gentlemen who simply took the time to speak to me because they felt they were "giving back to the community."   I was simply given advice when what i really needed was hands on help.  SCORE people are not hands on - they simply like to dispense advice.  You might try the Wall Street Journal Small Business Journal -  http://online.wsj.com/public/page/news-small-business-marketing.html

You can also do this on your own by doing a ton of reading on your industry.  My business "Bible" is Streetwise`s Finance and Accounting for Entrepeneurs.  You can do this - you do NOT need a mentor to get started!!!

In the relative terms of finding resources and networking opportunity I personally have had good success with S.C.O.R.E.  No, I am not naive when I say this because I too understand that most of the counselors just don`t understand `new fangled` things.

Hopeless Optimist
Of course, as a business owner, I have the keys to everyone`s problem.  Everything has a solution. I have found and created the greatest discoveries known to man.

Reality Check
However, when I take my ideas and present them to one of the SCORE counselors it is often then I can appreciate the advice they provide.  It is usually good practical advice, constructive criticism, and even a little bit `good` pessimism.

Conclusion
In the end, I believe SCORE is definately a tremendious value and very useful resource for many businesses.

I am a former SCORE small business counsellor.  The reason I am no longer a counsellor is because my own existing businesses take up far too much of my time.  But let me address some of your complaints about SCORE.

These people are volunteers.  They are providing their time and their knowledge to help you.  They receive nothing in return.  Since these are volunteer positions, you will find all levels of expertise.  If you aren`t happy with the counsellor you are talking with, ask for a different one.

These SCORE Counsellors are not always "old retired people" on their way to the rocking chair on the front porch.  Many of them are still very active in the business world, operating very successful businesses of their own.  Others are recently retired, some, because they are so successful,  at a much lower retirement age than many of you will experience.

You will find expertise, in some cases, far beyond any that you could pay for.  When I started my first business 20 years ago, I used SCORE.  The marketing specialist that worked with me was retired from a major New York advertising firm and had worked with some of the biggest marketing companies in the country.  His guidance enabled me to succeed beyond my wildest dreams.

And, no, they are not there to provide the answers to you or to do the research and work for you.  They are there to guide you and to make you think about research you should be doing.

Unfortunately, many of the people who contact SCORE are like pwheel.  They have a dream that they know will work regardless of what anyone tells them.  They aren`t willing to do the research, to write the business plan, to work out the financials.  Their ego and dream is to big for anyone to tell them anything.

As with any business counseling, you receive what you are willing to put into it.

My analogy . . . SCORE is a lot like the 1-800 help line provided by the IRS.  If you have specific questions -- plus a bit of patience and a little luck -- you can get exactly the right answers to resolve the problem you`re experiencing.  On the other hand, if you walk in with a grocery bag full of receipts and say, "Help me do my taxes," you`ll probably be disappointed.

As with paid consultants, some SCORE volunteers are better prepared than others to deal with the specific types of enterprises and unique challenges you find in small business (and especially with one-person start-ups).  Likewise, some small business owners go in more "ready" than others for what a SCORE counselor might have to offer.

Like the IRS help line or website, SCORE is a useful resource for small business owners -- but certainly not the only resource or even the best resource.

I`ve gone to 4 different SCORE offices in 3 different states and had similar experiences. The best way to use the resources that SCORE offers is to log onto their website and look for a virtual counselor that meets your needs.  For example, if you`re looking for ways to find capital, type in `venture capitalist` and you`ll get a list of counselors with their bios.  Send them an email and if you like your counselor you can exchange phone numbers to talk more frequently....if you have a question about marketing, then look for a counselor with a marketing background.  I was never fortunate enough to find a counselor that had the experience that I needed.

Good luck,

Hi Pwheel & others !

Sorry your introduction to SCORE was a bit harsh, but they are well meaning, I assure you.  I recently used the online counselor service, but I went through and picked people with a background in what I had questions about.  It took a couple days, but it was worth it.  I sent out my questions to 12 different counselors and almost all replied back !

Some were a bit terse, but I learned new things from them and several were very nice and took the time to explain themselves.  I then followed up with those that I felt comfortable with and now have great mentors that I can turn to.   I now have a master list of suggestions that is sitting in front of me right now, that I reference when I am thinking about how to address and solve my questions.

Just like on Startup Nation, there are some good resources - just use them.

Later,  Bill

Joyce-

I thinks its obvious that you didn`t read my 2 posts.  If you were a former score counselor I think that`s a great thing and I`m sure there are a lot of people who received great advice from you.  Like I stated, if your going to provide a service (whether a volunteer or paid), provide a GOOD one.  I have no problems with people telling me idea has a lot of holes in it....in fact, I have received that from a lot of people.  I have taken their advice and changed my idea based on feedback from other people.  The problem I have with score is that they really provided me with NOTHING!!!  I`m sure their are better SCORE counselors out there.....and I will try again.

I have no problem doing research and trying to find out information on my own.  And for your information, I WROTE A BUSINESS PLAN!  This business plan was based on idiots guide to starting a small business.  When I presented it to them and asked if I was on the right track, they responded that I should check the website and that would guide me about business plans.  Well, if I can just check a website why am I driving into to SCORE?  You said score WORKED for you 20 years ago.....well if they haven`t changed in 20 years (which by most accounts, it seems they haven`t)  then the system is obviously flawed.
