Search engines prefer to center all of their notice on "user visible" text. The user can't see the keywords metatags if not they view the source of your web page. It's this invisible aspect that makes the keywords metatag so attractive for a spammer to abuse it.

Meta tags are very important but the keyword tag has become useless in recent years. Search engines know that it's easy for anyone to add those and spam, therefore they give very little value if any at all to the keyword meta tag.

Meta tags indicates the search engine bot on what the particular page or site is for. The description that you are providing in the mata tags will be display as Google snippets in SERP's.

For me the most important is the title tag. The description is also used but the keyword META is not used by the major search engines.
