I am new here but I am not new in business.

I have noticed that you get lots of advice on how to get started and that is a good thing.Now I am wondering why would anyone chose to open up a business as is a lonely world that you are chosing.I can tell you that for sure lol

 

I disagree.  Why do you think starting a business is lonely?

There`s nothing more satisfying than taking control over one`s destiny, getting rid of the "boss," and owning the fruits of one`s own mind and efforts.

You want to talk about lonely! How about the countless lemmings who are lost in cube farms around the world, unknown ciphers in a thoroughly anonymous world of corporate business! Ask any of them if they believe "the higher-ups" know their name, and they`ll just shrug with a dull look.

Owning a business puts you directly in contact with the world. It connects you with others who are on the same journey, and because people who create a business also tend to be talkative, everyone is willing to exchange information.

Lonely? I don`t think so. Difficult? Absolutely. The only reason an entrepreneurial venture "seems" lonely is that the problems facing the owner are far more critical and important than those facing a typical emloyee. And so they want more to have a way to get some help, offload those problems, or wave a magic wand and make the problems go away.

That`s not lonely....that`s the extreme focus of high-risk, high-stakes gamesmanship.

I don`t have a business (yet), but that`s the thought that consumes me! I know I want to run my own business, although I am not clear as what the business is going to be.

Some of the reasons for wanting to have my own business were listed by CraigL. But in my case I believe the strongest reason would be freedom - I understand the concept of working twice as hard on my own business than I would as an employee. But I am talking about deciding when I can take a day or two off whenever I want (and, of course, whenever I believe I can based on the needs of the business).

To make my point a little clearer: today I asked my boss to take this coming Friday off, because a company I want to take a class from is coming to New York (they come every 6 months). His answer was a big NO, because someone else is taking the same day off already (my department consists of 3 people only, my boss included, so it is understandable why he would say no).
I got the same reply when I requested to take the week of Thanksgiving off...

I know that I may not be able to take any time off for many years once I start my business, but that`s not the point. The point is: today, I just can`t! Because someone else believes I cannot...I want to be responsible for that decision.

Running a business usually isn`t about difficulty and problems. More often, it`s about personal satisfaction. The freedom is another major factor, but then we`d have to define freedom.

Many people have no concept of why creative people sacrifice money, stability, organization, and success, simply to continue making their art. Does that mean that Art doesn`t exist, or has no purpose and benefit? No, it only means that what some people don`t understand they don`t want to do.

There`s a great signature line, "To those who cannot hear the music, the dancers must seem mad."

Ultimately, the reason and enjoyment of starting a business don`t require justification. Some people enjoy it, others don`t. It`s as simple as that.
