When you`re on the phone with a prospective client or customer - be focused on them and their needs.  Don`t be thinking about your to-do list or anything else you have going on in your day.  Ladies - NO multi-tasking allowed.  When you`re on the phone treat them like they`re the only person in your world for those few minutes.

People can sense when your attention wanders.  But it`s so imperceptible they just get a sense that you`re not all there.  They feel like they`re not important to you and when they have that feeling there`s a very good chance they`ll go elsewhere rather than do business with you.  When push comes to shove - people do business with peope they like and feel good about.

All the best,

Great point Denise.  Focus is key especially in a business that revolves around the phone.  In a face to face situation, physical and non verbal communication play a large role in the sales process, on the phone, the verbal communication is all that you have.  As stated above, "people do business with people they like and feel good about."  When talking to a prospect you always have to have in the back of your mind, what separates me from my competitors.  The simple answer is, me!  You must stand out and must leave an impression on your prospects and clients.

One tip I can add, be very conscious of your physical demeanor while on phone calls.  While this may sound silly, have a mirror on your desk and look at your facial expressions while you`re on the phone.  Would you do business with yourself based on how you appear in the mirror?  Like we`ve all heard before, "let them see your smile!"  Do not sell, rather have conversation.  People can tell the difference.  I was told this once before, people don`t care how much you know, until they know how much you care!

I`ve got a few:

When you leave a message, always leave your number (never assume the other person has it or their rolodex with them!) and speak it slowly! I swear those messages where the person is like "my number is 5 ... 1 ... 0 ... 48576389746740327320" like they work the auction floor in their spare time just cracks me up.

nhg - I always leave my number twice.  That way they don`t have to replay the message to make sure they got the number down correctly.

omupas - I remember my ol` telemarketing days (in a former lifetime) and having a little mirror to smile into as I literally would smile and dial.  The mirror wasn`t supplied - I bought one at Kmart and brought it myself - because it works so well.

Wasn`t there a Seinfeld episode about "phone etiquette," and how you`re supposed to put what spaces in a phone number?

Hi Craig:

I never was one to watch Seinfeld.  But as people reminisce about different episodes I realize that it truly WAS "the show about nothing."

omupas said~....People don`t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

I agree, I will always remember that one. Thanks!

I don`t  need the mirror anymore.  I perfected that smile years ago, and I definately believe in that! I just wish I had a business these days that they called me more, but it`s all done so easily online.

Hi Janie:

I agree with you.  My "mirror" days on the phone have been over for a long time.  Although if I`m tired because I didn`t sleep well the night before I`ll get up and walk around as I talk just so I sound more "energetic."  It helps me to get closer to walking those 10,000 steps a day we`re supposed to walk, too.  *wink*

I think it`s wonderful that you`re able to do all your business online.  That`s more typical with retail product businesses online.  And I understand that jerky products have enjoyed a huge popularity swing upward with all the people on low carb diets.

My experience and the experience of many mentors, coaches and consultants is that a website can be a great tool to "qualify" people - but because the process of how the service is provided is over the phone - they want to hear you on the phone - see if they like you and if they like what you have to say, your ideas, etc..

A couple weeks ago I talked with a woman in a MLM business about marketing mentoring and we had a great conversation.  I sent her a "thank you" afterwards.  Two weeks later I got an email back from her saying, "I really enjoyed the time we spent together on the phone.  Since we talked I`ve taken the suggestions you gave to me to heart and I`ve gotten five new recruits in that time.  I can`t afford mentoring just yet - but I will be able to do so very soon."

I was happy about her outcome.  And since I end up mentoring about 75-80% of the people I talk with on the phone who inquire - something must be working.

Denise, I didn`t mean to pop into the phone conversation thread like that.  If I was going to have a coach or mentor, I would need to talk to them too!!

Great job 75-80%!
