I recently started a small home-based business as a sole proprietorship - an Art and Design business. I just received my Fed tax ID # and believe I need to file for a trade name (since the business name is not my name). On the Trade Name application, it references needing a personal property account #. I do not have one currently - is this something I need? I live in Maryland and realize that not all states will have the same regulations - however - is anyone familiar with the personal property account and under what circumstances you need to have one?

Thanks for your help,
Carl

When you registered your business, the Maryland Department of Assessment and Taxation must have issued you a "department ID". It is a letter (most likely W or M) followed by numbers. I believe this is your personal property account number. Next year you will get a Personal Property Tax booklet and you will have to put that department ID on it. My business is also registered in MD.

I have not registered my business with the state. I guess that is part of the question. I thought, from what I read, that I needed to file a Trade Name Application. So, I do not have a department ID. I am trying to get a response from the Department of Assessment and Taxation.
