 A friend of mine has a site that has great page rankings for his keywords. The extensions at the of his pages are in .asp

index.asp
agreement.asp
services.asp

He`s using another web designer to "spice up his pages", but those pages will now be:

index.html
agreement.html
services.html

Will this affect his rankings? Will the search engines recognize this as a totally new website? Is there a way around this?

You could 301 redirect the old pages to the new/replacment pages.

What is your friends reason for going from .asp (Active Server Pages) to regular html? Why this sudden approach and why such a drastic change?

He`s getting extremely poor service from the people hosting his site and been having problems getting them to get their email problems worked out, so he wants out altogether.

He doesn`t have any backend programming going on or anything that would require the asp, it`s just a regular brochure type site with information, nothing to download, purchase or fill out.

He won`t be able to do a a 301 redirect since he`s leaving altogether.

Hmmm,

I never liked asp .. most every site I go to that uses asp is s l o w loading.

I second that Roland... I could care less for asp.. Here is what Im thinking Cart, If he moves his web site elsewhere, he might loose sudden positioning (not too much)
So if he`s going to move elsewhere, why not convert all html pages to asp? ASP hosting is cheap and its free with any windows hosting plan. Was your friends web site created in modules? for example header.inc, body.inc and footer.inc  or is it one page layout. If this is the case no need to worry... just convert them to .asp, if they are in modules, then there might be some extra coding involved... not like you have to be an asp guru.. or anything like that...

cartess3 - The 301 directive will work on the new host but I would leave them as ASP as all the links are directed to such pages and it leaves the option of adding dynamic features in the future.  Of course with apache (and I would assume IS) you can always use the ForceType directive to parse html as another language.

We`ll do as Edgar and Hostclick suggest and will tell him to go with an asp hosting provider and keep the pages the same name.

One, consider Williams Web Solutions for your design and hosting.

Two, either isn't persay better than the other; however, making changes to your file names/extensions will cause the search engines to lose your site momentarily.  Be sure to have redirects depending on the amount of traffic you were getting with the old file names.  However, be sure to resubmit your site back into the search engines.
