This StartupNation article on how to implement a powerful & effective public relations strategy on a shoestring budget is a terrific resource. Check it out & let the community know what you think. Has anyone tried some of these tactics?

OK Agian I will jump in and tell you that I have in fact started to try these tactics. We signed up for a full PR Newswire account through StartupNation. We have not released a press release through the service yet, instead we wanted to test the press release waters having never done anything like this before. We were able to locate resources on the internet specifically related to our industry, staffing and recruiting in this case and released our news to them. We also sent the press release to a few choice free / low cost services such as PRLeap. I can tell you we recieved some good traffic on our site and  were able to get included in an online magizine that is read by approx. 10,000 people in our target group, corporate recruiters. As well if you Google TemporarEase ( or Yahoo, MSN etc.)the TemporarEase release comes back in the results on other sites as well.

We do plan on doing a full press release in the coming months as well but some of the smaller stuff we have done has really helped increase or sites traffic.

Hi TemporarEase--

I just wanted to know... did you do anything special to your news release to make them show up in search engines?

I worked on a couple news releases last year and sent them through PRweb (I believe) and they showed up pretty high (first page) on Google and Yahoo. I tried to use some SEO tricks.

Then, a couple months later, I used the same tactics for another press release and got horrible results. I wonder whether anyone has any similar experiences.

Matt & Matt - you definitely want to optimize all press releases for search traffic, the same way you would an individual page on your website.  Select keywords, utilize them in the titles and body of the release, and ideally try to work in some keyword phrases linked back to your website.

As Matt S points out, Google and other engines are doing so much mashing up of search results these days that often news items end up at the top of the results page - just by putting out that press release, you`ve leapfrogged over the #1 organic search result.  You`ll eventually get pushed out by newer news, but the traffic benefits can be significant and the optimization benefits can be longstanding.
