Pencils, key chains and torches are very cost effective and these Promotional Products are use by every one.

The new rage is thumb drives. They're really useful and they don't get used up like pens or pencils. They're a little pricey but definitely worth the investment if you want to impress your clients.

I'll second the thumb-drive comment. But more than that, look for something that people will easily associate with your company. A bit of creative design can make a big difference here. If you're a plumber, give them a bottle-opener that's shaped like a pipe wrench, for example. People are right, just another pen will get lost in the piles of pens, but if you do something that's unique to your business it will stand out.

In my opinion, a good promotional item should be something that can be seen by other people(let's say something that stands on your office desk, not hiding in your home closet), that can be used in daily life(just like you said, not something collects dust) and that can be saved for a certain time of period(not something you use and throw away immediately, like a sticker or note pad). So I guess I prefer T-shirts (although they're usually stored in the closet there're still occasions people ware them and become the spot). Wink
