There are certain points to consider when you talk about the impact of backlinks on the ranking/traffic of your website, like
are just to name a few.
Do follow and no follow means nothing as well as PR ... Instead of just spouting out what you heard others say you should do testing for yourself and stop passing along bad advice...
Still amazes me after all these years (I have been online for over 25 years) how many just pass along garbage advice they heard from some other lame so called wannabe marketer...

Well i do heard of a site that relies only on content to optimize its site. No Back Links no nothing, just pure content.
Depends on the popularity of the community. But mostly links from community profile doesn't make any difference in your search engine ranking or SEO.
I agreed with Johnbatosh,.
profile link building is not a good idea because it doesn't return good result.
It depends on the PR and authority of the community of the website. It contains some weightage for SERP. :)
