I have an idea for a new way to market a product.  How do I approach the company to talk about my idea?  Do I want to contact someone in their marketing department and send them a detailed letter as to the plan?  If I did this how do I protect myself from their using my idea and me not being compensated?  Can I exect to be compensated.  This marketing approach would open up  a niche market.

You should also consider protecting your idea with a patent.  From your description you could qualify for a business method patent.  The companies you approach will have much more respect for you and will be less inclined to steal your idea if you are patent pending when you speak to them.  Would be glad to provide more information and/or help you file a patent application.  Contact me through my web site.
